Am joining to find out more about diabetes type 2 medicine. Have been on Metformin and some others that disrupted my digestive system so want to see what has been effective for others!

Hi @caz17 and welcome to the forum. Metformin has a bad press given the issues with tummy troubles, though the slow release version is allegedly kinder on the tum. Personally, apart from a couple of weeks with the trots, my tum settled down and I've been happily taking it for the last 4 years. It's the only diabetic medication I've ever needed thanks to my tolerance to it. You will find others on here who give it a big thumbs down due to side effects. Once more proving the theory that all diabetics are different!

There will generally be a hierarchy of medications that can be prescribed which will depend on what your HbA1C is, what dietary approach you have tried, if you need to lose weight and if what you are doing is not working then additional ones may be added or doses changed to find a balance of meds and diet that hopefully will work.
In some cases the only option remaining is insulin.
Do you have something in mind that you feel would be of benefit.
Reviewing your diet can sometime reveal more that you can do there before more medication is needed.
Many have found that a low carb approach works but whether that is suitable may depend on what medication you are already on. Hav*e a look at this link as it may give you some ideas. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Welcome to the forum @caz17

Sorry to hear you didn’t get on with Metformin. It’s usually the first med people are recommended, and most people find any digestive upset settles down fairly quickly, but we do have several members who don’t get on with it, and have a more severe reaction, which doesn’t ease.

NICE have a list of possible classes and types of medication arranged as a flow chart for Drs, to suggest which order and combinations of meds are generally found to be the most effective.

Hope this helps 🙂

Thanks. This week I was given Sitagliptin as alternative to Metformin. Have previously been given Dapagliflozin with Metformin but did not tolerate it and on going back to just Metformin got worse stomach issues. The slow release version did not seem to help either.

I think metformin just does not suit some people. I hope you get on better with the new medication but if it causes problems do go back to your GP rather than put up with it.
