Hi and welcome.

Would you like to tell us a bit about yourself and how you come to have diabetes?
Things like....
Are you recently diagnosed or an old hand and if so how long?
How do you manage your diabetes? ie Medication or dietary and lifestyle changes or both and if so can you tell us about them?
Do you know your most recent or if only just diagnosed, your current HbA1c result? This is the blood test result used to diagnose and monitor your management of diabetes and will usually be a number in excess of 47 mmols/L

Anything else else about yourself that you might like to tell us?

In return.... Are there any questions that you have for us or anything we can do to help you?

Hi Thank you. I was diagnosed about 2 and a half years ago and I also have an eating disorder so unfortunately I am not managing it at all at present. I do actually have a question. Anyone else with Type 2 go into a kind of food coma after eating things like cream and chocolate? It knocks me out and I have to sleep! Thanks in advance

High BG levels will make you very sleepy so if you eat foods that are high in sugar or starchy carbohydrates then your Blood Glucose (BG) levels will go high and you can fall asleep very easily. It is also possible to go into a real coma if you develop Diabetic KetoAcidosis which is usually referred to as DKA. This is when your BG levels go very high and you do not have enough insulin in your body. You blood turns slightly acidic and produces ketones which are toxic in an acidic environment and this can lead to you becoming very ill and potentially a coma, organ failure and death if it is not treated.
I am guessing that what you are experiencing is just extreme fatigue due to high BG levels but thankfully not DKA or you would have landed in hospital by now, but still you need to have this looked at or investigate it yourself by getting a BG meter and test strips and testing when you feel like that, because sooner or later it could develop into DKA.

Did you mean ice cream rather than just "cream and chocolate" Cream itself is mostly just fat but obviously ice cream contains sugar and so does chocolate.
Are you binging on these things? I used to do that and could easily eat a whole multipack of Snickers in one afternoon or a 200g bar of Dairy Milk and still want more. I managed to stop that when I was diagnosed and now that I follow a low carb way of eating, I have much more control over my disordered eating and I very rarely have any cravings for sugar or chocolate or sweet stuff although like an alcoholic, it would be very easy to slide back to it if I dip my toe in the water, so I do have to be quite disciplined with myself and stick to my low carb diet but it has become a new way of life for me and I am much healthier as a result.

It is important to manage your diabetes rather than ignore it because once diabetic complications start you can very rarely reverse them but you can manage diabetes well and reduce the risk of them happening. Gaining knowledge and understanding will help you to learn to live well with it. Sadly there are many people living with pain and blindness, who regret not looking after it better before it was too late. You can't turn back the clock once bad things happen so it is important to make some changes to look after yourself now.

What if any medication are you on for your diabetes and do you take it regularly? What was your last HbA1c result and when was that? Were you diagnosed before Covid or after?

Sorry, lots of questions again, but it really helps to know where people are with their diabetes so that we can tailor our advice to help them best. I know how tough it is because I was a sugar addict and Olympic standard comfort eater/binger, but you know and I knew that it was doing me harm and needed to stop. Support from this forum has helped me turn things around and kept me more or less on the straight and narrow although having to inject insulin also makes me think twice about having a binge, but changing my diet to low carb was a big turning point because the less carbs I have, the less I crave them and sugar is one of the simplest forms of carbohydrate.

Welcome to the forum @Miri

Sorry to hear about your diabetes, and that you are living with disordered eating alongside it - that must make things very challenging :(

Are you getting support and help for your eating disorder?

It might be helpful for you to be able to see what your BG levels were doing when you felt those lethargic feelings. Have you mentioned those feelings to your GP?

Do you take any medication to help with your diabetes mangement?
