Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone. I'm Gillian. I'm 46 and I have type 2 diabetes. I'm also insulin dependant. I've high blood pressure also. The short story is I took sick with some sort of vomiting and couldn't even hold water for 1st 5 days. I ended up in hospital not feeling right at all. My lactate levels where over 8 times the upper limit they should be. My bp was 203/113. My heart was tachycardic. I had ketones and high blood sugar and was dehydrated. They put me on Iv fluids. I've now a kidney infection. Feel weak and tired still. The past 3 weeks or so have been hard with all this. My sugars where around 24 . Now they're between 16 and 10.4 so are coming down slowly but surely thanks to nurse increasing my insulin doses. Feel like it's controlling me. Bit alone and scared. An device more than welcome. Glad to be here and looking forward to meeting others with diabetes.

Goodness @Gillian75 what a scary time you have been having 😱

Thank goodness for the hospital staff and nurse who looked after you and began to get you back on your feet.

With type 1 you often get given ‘sick day rules’ which help you to respond to rising BG levels in times of illness or injury with a flow-chart for how to adapt and tweak doses. I wonder if something like this is available for insulin-dependent T2s?

Glad to hear that your BG levels are gradually getting back towards being in range. Hopefully your energy levels will return before long.

Keep us posted, and let us know how you are getting on 🙂

The diabetic specialist nurse posted me a booklet on sick day rules. But yes that would be very helpful if available for insulin dependent type 2s. As the nurse has had to tweak my insulin doses for me. They were increased today again. So fingers crossed.

The sick day rules ive been given as a t2 on insulin are identical to those given to t1
