Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All

I'm in the process of being diagnosed- type 2. The results of my OGTT were 6.8 and 12.6. Dr has called me in for a HGa1c next week. I know you guys are not doctors, but do you think that my results indicate pre, or full blown diabetes? And what is the likelihood of meds being prescribed? I want to try and get an idea of how of how to proceed.
Many thanks for your time : )

Hi Amber, welcome to the forum 🙂 I believe an OGTT above 11.8 is sufficient for a full diagnosis of diabetes. In any event, your blood sugar levels are not those of a non-diabetic so it's best to treat yourself as if you have diabetes. Don't think that it is all gloom and doom though, it may be possible to control it by adaptations to your diet and activity levels, and it should be borne in mind that a healthy diet and lifestyle is beneficial to everyone! Many people find that their diagnosis leads to changes that result in them feeling healthier, happier and more energetic than they have felt for quite some time - it's often the spur to take stock and work towards a better and more fulfilling life 🙂

I would recommend having a look at the links provided in our Useful links thread - particularly good are Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and also Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker. All these will give you a good grounding in what to expect and how to tackle it 🙂

If you have any questions, please ask away and I'm sure one of the lovely, experienced and friendly people here will have the answer for you 🙂

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi Amber, welcome to the forum. Its a bit of a shock this type 2 diagnosis isnt it. I was where your are exactly 1 year ago, and whatever your diagnosis, as Northerner said above, we make changes, and the eventual outcome is often not as bad as we fear and can be a path to much better general health.

The problem is what changes are needed, and this is what confused me at first. Your diabetic nurse/GP should help, but also ask away on here and read what you can. It wont be long before you have it all sorted.

Thank you both for your responses! I shall definitely read all that I can to help me improve my health. I seem to have struggled with low energy levels for what feels like years, so in many ways finally getting to the bottom of it is a relief!
I'm sure I shall have more questions for you!
