Newbie from Suffolk

Hi I live in small town in Suffolk. I have been type 2 for around 35 years. I am 80 in December but quite active, go line dancing 3 or 4 evenings a week and do Zumba gold x 2 as well.
Wow - well done on the exercise front. That's more exercise than most people half your age do!! I thought I was being quite good with aquafit x 2 (can't do standing exercises). You remind me of a friend who did 50 lengths twice a week, well into her 80's. She was fit and could still get into her wedding dress from the 1950's!!

Hi and welcome.

Great to hear that you are keeping so active. That is impressive!

Would you like to tell us a bit about how you manage your diabetes? Are you on medication and if so which one(s). Is there anything particular which brings you to the forum at this time? If you have any questions feel free to ask them. There is a very broad range of knowledge and experience on the forum so we can usually provide a few different answers to any particular question. The thing to understand with diabetes is that it is quite individual, so what works for one person, may not work for another, but if you have a problem, we can usually suggest a few different things that you can try to see which one helps to fix it.

Anyway, look forward to hearing more from you and hope you find being part of the forum as beneficial as I do.

Well done on the excise front and wellcome to the board. You will find them a great bunch and full of support. Remember that no question is to small or to silly

Hello there @Robval and welcome to the forum...where in Suffolk do you live?..my late mother Lily was born in Lowestoft.

Hi I am on metformin but don’t have meter as not given to type 2 at our HC. I have review coming up December but as I have been going to slimming world which is high carb diet eg unlimited pasta, rice, potato and limited bread a bit worried what blood test will show. My bmi is 33. Only three weeks ago our HC had talk by our GP and a retired GP who has written book about low carb diet for diabetics. I have never been told in my 35 years as diabetic that I should eat low carb but just told to follow low calorie diets. So was confused as to what I should do and posted on here. I had some nice replies and one person kindly recommended Freshwell a free App from a group of Essex GPs giving more advice and low carb food plans for T2 diabetics who need to lose weight. (I would like to thank the person who posted but not good at finding things on here yet). So I have decided I will give slimming world a miss (took me a year to lose one and half stone) and try the Freshwell plans. I was due to pay £59.50 to SW for 10 weeks and the Freshwell app is completely free with no in app purchases so win win. Will hopefully start soon but have bad cold/cough/ sore throat and had to cancel cataract op I was due to have two days ago and feel I need to be 100% fit before embarking on low carb eating otherwise might get muddled with SW diet. Hope to post on here how I get on.

Hi @Robval and welcome to the group

Alan 😉

@Robval I'm due a cataract op on 31st. Ive had a nasty cold for three weeks and wondering if I will have to cancel. I have a lot of phlegm which I'm coughing up all the time!First cold this year. Had first sinusitis ever last week but it cleared up. How late did you leave it before cancelling? My op is in Norwich so not far from you.
I was diagnosed in July and went low carb. Lots of fish and veg eggs and cheese. I filled up and was losing 2lb per week with very little exercise. Completely different to F Plan that we used to look out. I've not lost in last few weeks maybe the cold or increasing carbs because I've had a new medicine added. I hope with some tweaks and exercise I will start losing again. I've lost a stone and a half.

Good luck

My cataract op was going to be Ipswich Hosp, they phoned two days before to see if I had cough, cold or eye infection. So hopefully where you go will do the same and you can discuss with them. If you have lost 1.1/2 stone since June you have done well. Did you do it on own or did you get support from HC? Although my HC gave us talk about low card 3 weeks ago there is no follow up support,

One of the reasons a cough is not good is you have to keep perfectly still so any jerking from a coughing episode could be disastrous.
Other half has had both eyes done recently and it is important to follow the aftercare instructions to the letter.
He found it tricky to find some glasses to suit his vision in the recovery period and in between having the other eye done. His vision is only just settling down about 2 months on. He has bifocals for near and far vision but they are not good for the computer.

I’ve had cataract op in one eye about 2 months ago. I was hoping for longer sight for driving but was warned that as I have had laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy I might get brighter colours, which I have, but that even though they have put lens in for longer sight there might not be a lot of improvement, at the moment I don’t think there is much difference in distance sight. When I get second eye done will go opticians to see if any improvement.

@Robval maybe it's an East Anglian cough. I have an autoimmune eye condition and have waited more than 6 months. I thought I was getting better so finished cough medicine yesterday but am going to Boots to buy more tomorrow. it helps that I have never smoked and im surprised how awful this is.
I was told in June a blood test on review of my blood pressure my cholesterol had inched up. I asked if they had tested for diabetes, I had assumed they did when told no I asked for a test as my toes at night felt numb and I was peeing more. Whilst waiting for the result I went low cholestral and when result was 69 I looked at carbs. I was surprised how easy it was. It helps fish is so available smoked and fresh. Today I got crevettes trout cod and sea trout. I also eat some meat. I've never met my GP. DN seemed very busy. Weight never discussed. I knew I was overweight but now regret a GP didn't tell me to move more and eat better years ago. If I go to a cafe I often have a sandwich as probably better than other choices. One of my local cafes sells frittata. After the grief of being diabetic I was so pleased when my trousers fell down. I reckon I need to lose another stone and a half my bmi is 28 but another stone on top of that would be sensible.
I suspect GPs take a kinder approach to people approaching eighty but your exercise regime is brilliant. I like the freshwell site but there are people who prefer to calorie count.

I think it may partly depend on whether you were long or short sighted as to how the operation will improve vision of not, OH was long sighted but with some astigmatism. But they put a different number of lens in each eye which seemed odd.

I'm short sighted so will choose a low minus so l can read without glasses but will need glasses for distance. My main problem is my pupils are stuck down and with the cataract they cannot see back of eye.

Thanks for filling in some of your back-story @Robval - and brilliant to hear about your line dancing and zumba!

Hope you get on well with the transition to a lower carb menu - just remember it isn't NO carb, and you don't have to throw the baby out with the bathwater so to speak. Initially some portion reductions to get you down towards 130g of total carbs per day might help, and from there you can take your time and see what, if any, further adjustments may be helpful.

All the best for your next eye op too - and hope you get the improvements to vision you were hoping for once the recovery has run its course.

Saxmundham last 20 years before that Cambridge.
Hi @Robval and welcome to the forum. Saxmundham is a lovely place. Used to pass through on the way to Aldeburgh. I lived and worked in Suffolk before retiring to Lincolnshire. I have read many good things about a low carb diet on the forum. It is easier than calorie counting and helps you manage blood glucose levels. You sound you are doing plenty of exercise already so a new approach to eating should help you lose weight. As others may have already said it is a long term change to what you eat but it gives you plenty of food choices that keep you full. Good luck

Interestingly when I went to the talk at HC the doctors first words was to apologise to everyone there for in the past saying to lose weight by cutting calories and exercise more as he now knows this doesn’t work and then we had talk re low carb.
