Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all,

I've joined the group from Ireland. I run a website there that is aimed at users sharing their stories and experiences. My aim is to produce a publication that can be given to those diagnosed with Diabetes. This would be inline with all the other publications but would be from a user perspective.

I am Type 1 for the past 15 years and recently my HBA1c went completely out of control. I received great support from my medical team but the best support I got came from those who understood exactly what I was going through. I'm a girl who loves structure and organisation and more importantly control - so when my diabetes began to stick its finger in and butting into my life in a big way, I needed to change things.

My HBA1c is normally around 8.1 / 8.2 but before Christmas it jumped to 12.1 I think I spent most of Christmas crying. Of course it was no-ones fault but my own. I took my eye off the ball. Got carried away and paid the price.

I've been wrokig really closely with my medical team over the past few months and my HBA1c is now down to 9.4 (last nights reading). Not quite there yet but getting there.

So looking forward to being part of the group!

Susan.

Welcome Susan.

To remind people not to reply to your posts with references to NHS etc, it might be worth adding Ireland to your signature or profile.

Well done for getting your HbA1c back down after your pre Christmas blip. Have you been offered a place on a DAFNE course (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating)? They started in Germany, and are irregularly available throughout UK, varying between health authority areas and between the 4 nations.

Hi Susan welcome to the forum 🙂 We've been sharing experiences (and occasionally getting together in 'real life'!) here for about 2.5 years now and it is definitely one of the best resources for people with diabetes, in addition to their medical team. Diabetes can be isolating, with the general public's perception often confused, and stigmatised by the media, so it's good to be with others who 'get it'. 🙂

I wish you well in your endeavour, and look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi Susan and welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll find some interesting experiences on here as well as some good advice and tips. I also look forward to hearing more from you and getting the perspective of different healthcare experiences. Take care. XXXXX

Hi Susan and a warm welcome to the forum

hi Susan... welcome to the forum 🙂

Welcome to the forum Susan! 🙂 x

Welcome to the forum 🙂

Hi Susan, welcome.
I just joined up last month. Im from Ireland too, and find this very helpful, if not just for the diabetes experiences of others, but also for to meet and chat to new people too.
i am a Type 1 for nearly 19 years. i too have had high blood sugars of late, in feb they were 10.4, but they have now come down to 9.4. Which i am delighted with in the short lenght of time. I have started exercising more, and watching what im eating, esp after the DAFNE course.
Feel free to PM me anythime for a chat.

Noelle

Thanks

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome. I look forward to chatting, discussing, leaning, helping and supporting!

I just completed the Berger course which I believe is very similar to the DAFNE course. It has changed my life. I can't believe I lived with diabetes for so long without properly understanding carbohydrate counting and insulin adjustment. I think I missed the original class

Dear Susan

Welcome, this forum is a great place for support and information. I'm an old man who loves structure and organisation too. As an example, do you really mean HbA1c or are you measuring your blood glucose after your meal?

Warmest Regards Dodger

No that's my Hba1c alright! I see your figures are well controlled. Well done you! That was the highest my HbA1c ever was since I was diagnosed type 1. I'm working really hard at the minute adjusting my insulin and counting my carbs. For a girl who likes structure it suits me fine! Thanks again for the welcome.

Welcome Susan to the forum. You are doing well and sounds like you have a brilliant medical team. What part of Ireland do you come from? We have relatives in Ballynhinch Co Down. Sheena
