Hello, My name is Graham, just turned 60, I have just been told by my gp that my blood test result was at 50 mmol/mol 6.7%, making me diabetic, I do have blood pressure which is controlled well with medication, I am 5’10 and 14.5st, so classed as overweight, I go to the gym twice a week, for a mild workout, not excessive.To say this news has come as a shock to me is an understatement, I have to give another blood test in 2 weeks time, for what reason I don’t know, should’ve asked.
I admit my diet hasn’t been the best, but no means the worst, I don’t drink alcohol, other than the occasional beer if out for a meal, and often a Chinese or fish and chips meal at the weekend.
Having had a quick look at the forum, I’m liking the stories of putting into remission, and obviously this is my goal, I have full support from my family as I start this voyage of discovery as a very nervous and worried man.
I note so many contradictions in what’s a good diet, so confusing for me, one says eat this and another says don’t eat this.

You seem to have a really positive attitude about things so keep hold of that, it’s honestly not so bad once you get your head around it. I spent a few initial weeks convinced I would starve to death 😱 but now I wouldn’t change my diet for anything! You will find all you need to work out what’s best for you on these pages, so make a brew, get comfy and read as much as you can!
Key things to know, our body uses carbohydrates exactly the same a the obvious sugars, so these really need to be reduced or cut out (we are all different in what we can/can’t tolerate), things like rice, pasta, potatoes and bread are the worse. Testing your blood glucose is key to working out what foods work for you, if you test before a meal, then again 2 hours later and look for a rise of no more than 2, if it’s higher then you need to tweak or avoid. Keeping a food diary helped me as it was easy to get a picture of how I was doing over time 😛
 
Thanks CathyB, good news is my daughter is into healthy eating so hopefully that’s going to help, it’s just the shock of the diagnosis hitting me, hopefully it will all fall into place over the coming weeks, thanks.
 
Many people believe my diet is dreadful - they believe that it is healthy to follow the Eatwell guide - I have been encouraged to eat that way for decades despite telling people it made me feel really ill.
When diagnosed I went all out for normal numbers, and once I got to 8mmol/l after meals I stuck to the same way of eating and saw my numbers going down and down.
I did not try to see how many carbs I could eat and still stay under 8mmol/l - I thought that was pushing my luck.
Now I know I could eat more - it would just mean that my weight went up and up and up. Not going to happen.
The joy of being a type two is that I can have meat, shellfish, fish cheese eggs - lovely big salads, stir fries and a bit of high cocoa chocolate.
My doctor has been sulking for the last couple of years, ever since I dropped below Hba1c of 48. I have NFA on my file.

Thanks for that, and good work, I’m hoping to get to those numbers also, I’ve no idea what the eatwell diet is, there are so many out there, need to research these.

Graham, remember that ‘healthy eating’ mean different things for a type 2 diabetic! Have a good read of the information here so you can make your own mind up about how you want to go forward. Beware of low fat options as they often have high carbs/sugars, all you need to know is on these pages so do take some time to read 🙂
