Hi

I have just registered as my dad was recently diagnosed with TY2 diabetes and I need to learn as much as possible. After finding this board I have been reading posts and learning from them, thanks to everyone already 🙂
I thought diabetes was an easy diet to keep to and look after until the actual reality hit me and now I realise support and guidance are needed.

It is refreshing to read posts and see the care everyone has for each other and how much members cope with. I have a few questions already and hope it's ok to ask as a carer.

Hi Pippn. Welcome 🙂

Rob

Hi Pippin welcome to the board, it's great to see how supportive you are of your dad, he must really appreciate it 🙂

I'm not type 2, so can't advise much, but as you say, it's way more than just eating the right foods 🙂

Thank you for the welcome 🙂 I have a few dietary conflicts with my dad as sometimes he has a strict low purine diet which doesn't allow food on his diabetes control list! At the moment I take a ring file of information with me shopping 😉

I'm sure you've probably picked this up from the forum, but what works for one doesn't always work for the next person - most of the time you will need to experiment with different foods to find out what works for him 🙂

Hi shiv

My biggest problem is filling dad up! He loves dinner but isn't over weight in fact the dietician recommended more snacks. At the moment we haven't been told to test bloods which has me a bit more worried as I wouldn't know until the next test if things are improving :( I will have more questions for the dietician this time now I've been coping & wondering about portion control. They don't want him to loose weight & he can eat a lot of dinner. It isn't the sweet things it's proper dinners!

Really encouraging to know there may be things he can eat or portions he can have which may not be advised for someone else. Thank you

I'm guessing that your dad is following a low purine diet as a result of gout? What snacks did the dietician suggest? Balancing the aspects of both a low purine diet and a diet suitable for someone with type 2 diabetes definitely needs professional individualised advice - just the sort of challenge dieticians relish!

Hi pippin and welcome to the forum. 🙂
Must say I'm impressed that you've taken the trouble to join, in support of your dad! I'm sure you will be glad you did.

hi Pippin.... welcome to the forum 🙂

Thank you so much for all your welcoming posts 🙂 I really appreciate each one.

@Copepod the dietician didn't really guide on this as it was our first session with her & my mind was so full of all the details of the diabetic diet. Both of us explained about the Gout (which is due to the other medication my dad takes for his heart) her only advice at this stage was 'whatever' could be tolerated although I am going to be prepared next visit as it is very difficult when gout flares up. When under control the normal diet would be fine but when reminded of gout last week it was balancing foods allowed for both

I really hope now we have started with future appointments we can get more advice. I definitely have more questions now as I seem to be a walking data machine lol

I don't know if all TY2's eventually test their BG levels as at the minute dad only has his done at the surgery and that isn't regularly. Perhaps when they have completed the main tests (dietician said they have several fasting/non fasting) we will get detailed advice as I would like to know if the things I am doing are affecting levels etc Next appointment is the first one with a podiatrist - clean feet required!

We are also going to get advice on exercise equipment if this will help with the overall control. He is very active without gout but with gout :(

I really admire how all of you cope as I didn't realise the complexities until now. Thanks everyone for being so friendly 🙂
