Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi there. I have been Type1 from childhood and that's over 45 years ago. I am still reasonably ok - generally with 6.5 to 7 HbA1C, work full time and have 2 teenage kids, neither of which have developed diabetes so far thankfully. As I have been managing ok, I have kind of been left behind in my knowledge of progress/options which have occurred over the years (including the questions about pump usage positives and negatives) and don't really have much outside knowledgeable support network though I have a very supportive husband. I don't know anyone else with T1 to confer with. As I am getting older and things are generally feeling harder work to maintain, and confidence feels lower these days in handling work/kids/exercise/menopause etc, I just thought I would look here and see if I could reach out to other people in a similar position. Thanks.

It's easy to sort of get left by the wayside if you don't keep on updating yourself, I agree.

I learn a lot by reading stuff on this forum - but a place you might start is imagine you know nothing at all - and read the whole 'new T1 advice' section from Diabetes UK, and take it from there? Go to the 'Learning Zone' on the website and take it from there.

Hello Ali

Well your introduction sounds exactly how I felt.....and why and how I found myself here. Not sure how I stumbled across the forum now, but so glad I did. I’ve learnt so much in the time I’ve been here.

Welcome along, I’m sure there are things you’ll be able to share with us too🙂

Hello @Ali32 and welcome, glad you've joined us 🙂

It is easy to get out of the loop with more recent tech if you're managing well on the regime you've been on for years but there is some great tech around with new pumps and the Libre glucose monitor.

There is a wealth of experience and support on here, I've learnt so much from reading how others manage and maintain their control plus it's so good to know everyone on here 'gets' diabetes and all it's challenges.

Welcome @Ali32
When I joined this forum I had only met one other person with T1 and that was one of my students, so it was good to find a place to ask questions of people who just ‘get it’ and have practical advice.

I was only diagnosed 11 years ago and even then I am amazed at the developments that have taken place, and the increased access that there has been to pumps and The Libre. I learntof these from reading on here and then went to my DSN and Consultant and followed this up. There is such a wealth of knowledge and experience on here.

I look forward to hearing more from your u.

Hi Ali and welcome to the forum. 🙂 I think there's a lot of people in your position. I was the same 3 or 4 years ago. I'd never done DAFNE, didn't know much about pumps or CGMs and felt a bit left behind. I've now been on the pump just over a year and it has made such a difference to my control. I wish I'd done it earlier. If you get the chance I'd definitely recommend trying it. I wrote a bit about getting and using the pump here:

Thanks for your response. I have not been offered a chance for a pump or CGM up to now but I haven't asked for it either...got the 'don't fancy having a machine attached continually' thought also!
I would be interested in CGM more I think as my main issues are usually related to exercise bg readings being hard to predict and not always easy to repeatedly check in the middle. This often means high and low both a possibility and sometimes difficult for the next day after a busy evening the night before!
