Hi guys well since being diagnosed last week and after reading a lot of the helpful information on here (thanks all), I am now on a low carb diet. I’ve never really been a big eater anyway so I’ve actually luckily found it fairly painless so far. I’ve started counting my carbs and I pretty never go over 100g a day - sometimes less. Apart from not having anything sugary and only eating low carb foods I’m not really paying much attention to anything else, specifically fat content. When I was diagnosed I was also told my cholesterol was “quite high”. Given that should I also be watching for fat content? I am losing weight so assume I can’t be having too much fat anyway? Is this right to assume? I’m also wondering if this drop to low carb so quickly could be damaging to my health as well? Though I wasn’t a big eater I did eat quite a bit of rubbish mostly in the form of crisps.

Reducing carbs gradually can help prevent issues with eyes and nerves that some people can get, it is suggested reducing by one third for a couple of weeks, then another third until you get to where you want to be.
Many people find that reducing carbs helps to lower cholesterol and adopt normal fat not necessarily high fat as low fat is often higher in carbs.
I assume you need to lose weight so again having normal fat should not hinder that if you are reducing carbs.
As always there are many theories as to what is best, but do your research and adopt what works for you.

Hi @Leadinglights I’ve not been told to lose weight I’m just taking it upon myself to do it. I’ve not really been told anything to be honest. Just you’re diabetic and here’s some meds basically. Still don’t know my hba1c. My BMI was in the normal range but I have been lighter in the past so it can’t hurt to try and get nearer to that weight. Ok maybe I should try and work out how many carbs I was consuming before then. Knowing what I know now, I’m not sure I really wanna know now though lol. Ok thanks for the advice.

I know it sound a frightening prospect but it does give you an idea where you are starting from and there may be some very obvious savings you can make but knowing your HbA1C will inform you whether you need just some modest changes or something a bit more radical.
It is a bit like not wanting to stand on the scales for fear of what they might say.
