Newbie and Glucose Testing

Hi Everyone I am new to the group as I recently found out that I was pre-diabetic, but I am managing with my new understanding of sugar and carbs. What I found after a couple of weeks was that without glucose testing, it is near impossible to just "lose weight and exercise". I am really sporty and need to lose a couple of stone, but this weight came on after a hysterectomy and I have struggled to "just lose the weight" since then. I bought a glucose test and strips because my GP would not provide them despite their despair at 1 in 3 people going on to actually get diabetes. I am really angry that we are denied the tool to manage and prevent diabetes. I am lucky to be able to afford it (just) and I have lost almost a stone in 7 weeks simply by understanding how my body and its glucose levels react to certain foods. What do others think? I would be interested to hear from others, including medics. Telling people to lose weight and exercise is not the answer, it is no wonder 1 in 3 go on to get diabetes! I have connections to a University Medical School and will be raising this as an issue. Again, is this the same old same old from many sufferers 🙂
 
Unfortunately it has been the same for at least 50 yeas in my personal experience. If a patient doesn't respond as expected to instructions to do what is required of then, it is the patients fault.
From doing Atkins successfully I knew what worked for me, but was always told that it was wrong to be right.
After abandoning normal diets I have lost a Kg a day in some extremes - over a weekend when I did not have access to weighing scales.
Seeing the drop in glucose levels when I stopped eating full portions of peas and beans was significant for me - I seem to be able to get more out of them than most people, and since then have found a few more who do the same thing. Without my trusty Tee 2+ I might well have gone on eating my home grown legumes and not making much progress.

Thank you for the reply and it seems that you were well informed and able to take the right action as well. Brilliant achievements!! I have to attend a Healthier You programme in a week or so - it has taken several weeks for them to book me on. I will do the programme as I am likely to learn some good tips, or even help someone else, but really a Glucose monitor or a supply of strips and a book by Dennis Pollock (60 ways to reduce your blood sugar) would be a much better spend of money by the government!! 😳🙂

Ah - well hopefully the course is better than the one I was sent on where they advised baked potato and beans for lunch.
 
Hi jaycloth, welcome to the forum.

To be honest, it can be hit and miss regarding the advice you get from your GP so it's great that you've joined as you can see what works for others in real time.

Glad that you got the glucose meter as it's really handy in keeping track of things and figuring out how your meals are impacting your blood sugar levels.

As you're pre- diabetic, you've got a great opportunity to turn things around with a few tweaks so do feel free to ask as many questions as possible and we'll do our best to help.

Glad you’ve found an approach that works for you - and congratulations on the weight loss.

Yes it’s unfortunate that BG monitors aren’t made more widely available.

There is some research that shows they don’t work well for everyone. But there does seem to be a significant population for whom self monitoring makes a huge difference when it comes to tweaking their diet and finding a long-term effective BG management strategy
