Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi
Be gentle as its early days and I will have loads of questions you guys will have seen loads of times. I am 3 weeks onto the big D with type 2 taking metformin for just over a week. I am having real problems with vision and I am getting conflicting advice from Doctors. Doctor who started off my diagnosis told me i was type 2 then went on holiday for 2 weeks so visited another Dr at the practice who gave me Metformin. told him my eyesight was very poor and blurred he said dont worry it should settle in a couple of weeks advised me not to get an eye test as they would give me glasses which would be useless to me when my eyes settled down. My original Dr returned from holiday 7 days later and called me to see how i was and srt out a blood test for something else and when i told him about my eye problems said see an optician today for a standard eye test he seemed to feel it was urgent. I am confused now.

Any advice would help please.

Welcome Seeki,

Blurred vision does go hand in hand with high blood sugars and could well improve as they come down so the first doctor was correct. However, your regular doctor is correct too as there's always a chance it could be something else. I suggest you get an eye test done just to be on the safe side and ask your doctor for a referral to the eye/diabetic clinic in your area for a retinopathy scan. Are they allowing you to test your blood sugars? Some PCTs don't permit T2s to do this but it is a good idea to ask as you can use it to learn how food and exercise affect you. If they say no, it is still worthwhile getting yourself a meter and some strips, if you can afford it as they aren't cheap, and testing anyway.

Seeki hi and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome to the forum. 🙂

I can confirm from personal experience that my eyesight was all over the place after diagnosis. It took a few weeks before it settled down. Sometimes my vision was very blurry, other times it improved so much I could take my glasses off!!

It might be worth seeing the opticians whilst things settle but, personally, I'd wait until I didn't notice any further changes (but that is a personal preference). Either way, don't buy a new pair of glasses until your eyes have settled otherwise you'll just be wasting money!

Andy 🙂

Thanks to all🙂

I have a planned call with the doctor who gave me metformin and said dont get eyes tested yet its time i got the right advice from those people who are supposed to be looking after me. After all it is their job right?
I read all about your care team on diabetes website and wonder at the moment where mine is since my diagnosis which was a call from my doctor saying you got type 2 and im going on holiday for 2 weeks see you when i get back to actually seeing another doctor after my second set of bloods came back and then waiting 2 more weeks to get an appointment with the diabetes nurse to understand diet and what i should and shouldnt eat im just feel a bit short of info apart from what i have found out myself not a lot has come from my "Care Team" still i am seeing the nurse on friday lets see what that has to offer. I just wonder how someone who does not use the internet would be getting on without information or support. I am 49 and an IT pro so i am more than able to self help and get to places like this for suport and advice but one does wonder and feel for those who get this diagnosis and are then left high and dry to worry like i did.
A new journey for me and as hanks agin for the replies and sorry about the rant just feels good to write it down and rationalise:D

Spare a thought for those who got any type of diabetes before they invented the internet ..... we just had to join DUK and wait for Balance to be delivered through our letterboxes. No books written for ordinary people to read, just medical textbooks was all there was.

Esp if you were an adult who got T1 cos as far as the world was concerned, it only happened to children .....

Yet - we survived!

Yes - you certainly do have to educate yourself.

Care Team? - well if anyone asks who treats MY diabetets - the answer is a resounding ME. The rest of em only offer advice (should I decide to take it and sometimes I don't) and provide prescriptions.

The whole of the rest of it is very firmly down to yours truly.

Welcome to the forum Seeki 🙂
