newly diagnosed with a HB1a of 137 (up from 37 9 months ago). Summoned in by our diabetic nurse even though she didn’t have an appointment free she came in early to see me. Did a prick test reading of 22! This was on Wednesday, she recommended I went on a carb free diet and then on Saturday I was to start taking glicazide. My bloods have come down to 4.7 after just 5 tablets since Saturday morning. Should I contact her to check I’m doing things right? The drastic reduction concerns me that if I take my next dose I’m going to go into hypo. Thanks for reading

Hi Chippy, my starting point was also 22, did you have any symptoms as I was a mess, eyesight issues and peeing for England, my moods were all over the place, emotions out of control from anger over nothing to crying. I would check in with your nurse if its worrying you, it will put your mind at rest.

Hello @Chippy61

Welcome to the forum.

I think you are right to be cautious. And it certainly sounds like it would be worth contacting your nurse, but in the meantime it seems like you need to re-introduce a small amount of carbohydrate alongside the tablets you are taking.

Gliclazide works by making the pancreas produce more insulin (https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/gliclazide/), and it certainly seems to be working effectively and speedily in your case. Perhaps your nurse did not expect your BG levels to reduce this quickly.

Meds for diabetes only ever work alongside a person’s diet, and both diet and meds need to be balanced to support the individual’s metabolism.
