Hi everyone, thought i'd say hello and tell you about my stroy.

It was quite a tragic diagnosis, but i'm aware other people have been in worse trouble.

I was 15 years old, just starting my GCSEs etc. I was tired often, thirsty etc (all the usual signs). My doctor just kept telling me i was tired from exam stress, i was probabaly slightly aneamic and hormonal.. So sent me home with an iron tablet. Months had passed by and i got worse, but i was just taking the doctors word that it was exam stress. After my exams i had lots of time off school cause i was just too ill to go. I was drinking 4-5 litres of lucozade a day (without realising this was actually worsening my problem) to try get energy and quench the thirst. I also lost like 4 stone in 3 months. I went back to a different doctor with an ear infection, he took one look and me and sent me straight to hospital there and then. They were astonished i was still walking. I had severe DKA and my bloods were in the high 40's.

After a while in hospital i was sent home with my insulin injections and everything went well. Things are a little rocky right now, my control isnt great, but im getting by.

Hiya, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear it took so long to diagnose you - thank heavens for that other doctor recognising the symptoms! It seems this is much more common than I would have imagined before being diagnosed myself and learning more and reading more stories like yours.

Please feel free to join in and ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly' here - we're all here to help and support each other! 🙂

I was in a similar situation to you. Drinking Red Bull like it was going out of fashion. Only spotted at a pre operation assessment.

Hi Kwass and welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the snappy replies!.. I was told this site has a lot of members who're willing to help and welcome all diabetics, good control or bad... it's proved itself already!. I'll definitely be a regular, for advice and to hopefully return the favour!!

We aim to please! :D

:D Always helps to know there are people out there willing to help!

Hiya and welcome! Your story sounds very much like mine, except I was 8. And like you, very ill but no one realised until it got so bad I was throwing up at school - they thought I had a virus so my nan took me to a different doctor! Like you severe DKA and BGs up in the 40's. Not pretty D:

Welcome to the best place on the net, its because of these guys I got my hba1c down from 11.8 to 6.6 in 5 months. They are amazing and you are a very welcome new member to the wonderful place =)

Hi Kwass,

Sounds a little like what my story must have been like. I was five. If you ever want someone to chat to I'm more than happy to give you my MSN details over a PM or I'm on Facebook.

Hello Kodie, welcome to the forum! 🙂

I'm just a 'mere' type 2 so probably won't be giving you too much advice.

I'm always amazed about our bodies though. Before diagnosis, I was downing 2L bottles of fizzy pop every day. On reflection, I think I was subconciously trying to deal with both feeling thirsty AND needing energy (I'd lost a stone without realising it!).

I'm sure that you will find the guys and gals here most informative and friendly! I certainly have.

Andy 🙂

Thankyou for all the really warm welcomes!! :D:D

I now know i'd feel comfortable coming to any of you when i need advice.. And hopefully i'd be just as helpful as returning it!

Put a smile on my face and i've only been a member for a few hours!

Thanks everyone!

Hi
I have just joined as my son is 15 and diabetic diagnosed last summer in similar circumstances to you. He is struggling with control at the moment although would not admit that! Well he would but he just doesn't seem to care. Says its his life and body to do whatever he wants. One day I might persuade him to join and talk about things.

Hiya Kodie 🙂

Welcome to the forum, i am a little older than you (22) but was also diagnosed in a state, fortunately you were lucky to have one of those clever doctors that actualy recognised the signs! I was only diagnosed in february this year and have learned a great deal from the wonderful people on this forum 🙂

Feel free to ask any questions and if you wanna talk/rant u can message me (either pm or facebook me)
