I was taking metformin 2 tablets a day for about 4 weeks about January I was going to the loo nearly ever hour day and night not sleeping feeling drained and lost over 2 and a half stone in under 2 weeks went to the doctors who sent me straight to a&e was there most of Friday night had to go back all day Saturday half day Sunday then Monday to learn how to inject myself I am using lantus insulin once a day and 4 metformin tablets daily I have a blood monitor that I was using 4 times a day now only once as my sugars seem to be under control I have had a retinal eye test which was all clear my sight was really bad from January for about 2 months had to wear glasses as I couldn't see anything, I'm just getting on with it now, haven't seen or spoken to anyone for months about diabetes just learning from yourself and the Internet .This must be awfully confusing for you and it would be a good idea if you could find out what tests you had as that will help people help you and make suggestions on the next step.
You would have been diagnosed by an HbA1C test where a result over 47mmol/mol would give you that diagnosis but would not tell you what type you would be, that requires other tests. You may be told what type you are based on clinical symptoms, thirst, frequent loo visits, UTIs and if you are over weight then the assumption is you are Type 2. But those symptoms plus if you suddenly lost weight without trying then the pointer could be for Type 1 or LADA so additional tests should be done.
You should also get foot and retinal screening eye tests as well.
As you have been given insulin I would assume your HbA1C was quite high, but often other oral medications would be the first port of call so were you prescribed any of those. What insulin have you been given?
It would be usual to have a follow up HbA1C after 3-6 months to check that any measure are working.
Also have you been given a monitor to test your blood glucose at home as that really is mandatory if you are on insulin.
If you drive there are rules about that also.
If you are happy to share some of that information and how you came to be diagnosed that would help people answer the questions I'm sure you must have.
From what you say I would almost certainly say you are Type 1, the weight loss being a big clue, that being the case you really should have more support from a specialist diabetic centre to give you a better working regime with your insulin and offer you some training for eating normally, matching carb intake to your insulin and a basal /bolus regime which would give you a more flexible diet.I was taking metformin 2 tablets a day for about 4 weeks about January I was going to the loo nearly ever hour day and night not sleeping feeling drained and lost over 2 and a half stone in under 2 weeks went to the doctors who sent me straight to a&e was there most of Friday night had to go back all day Saturday half day Sunday then Monday to learn how to inject myself I am using lantus insulin once a day and 4 metformin tablets daily I have a blood monitor that I was using 4 times a day now only once as my sugars seem to be under control I have had a retinal eye test which was all clear my sight was really bad from January for about 2 months had to wear glasses as I couldn't see anything, I'm just getting on with it now, haven't seen or spoken to anyone for months about diabetes just learning from yourself and the Internet .
