Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all I'm Lisa

Been diabetic for 3 yrs, T1, on insulin for one year. In a similar position to others on the site, as I'm finding it hard to adjust and get used to injecting (any tips would be helpful (on humalog and levemir) and brusing badly 🙂.

Personally am finding it awfully challenging to eat out with friends and family as I don't know how to count carbs with what to eat or when they order take aways.

Thanks in advance 🙂

Hi Lisa,
A warm welcome to the forum from me, i cant help alot as im type 2 on no injections, but everyone here is extremely freindly and you will soon find out the support aint half bad either x

Hi Lisa. Welcome 🙂

When you say you've been on insulin for 1 year, what were you on prior to that ?

I'm not the best at injecting and I've been doing it for quite some years. I still bruise and it still stings sometimes. I'm not sure I'm qualified to offer advice on that one ! 🙄

You can ask to go on a course called DAFNE (or a similar local course) which will teach you how to carb count and what you can and can't eat, etc.🙂

hey lisa welcome from me too ...have a good look around and remember no question is regarded silly here 🙂

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum 🙂 We've been diagnosed about the same length of time! I also find eating out with friends or takeaways a challenge as you don't really know what is going into them. The Carbs & Cals book can be a useful guide for estimating carbs in popular meals in different portion sizes, so is well worth a look. Other than that, the best you can do is to choose things off the menu that are more predictable and perhaps split your fast-acting insulin so you have some upfront then the rest after you have got a better idea of your carb consumption.

What size needles are you using? This might be a reason behind the bruising if they are too long or too short. You can get lengths varying from (I think) 12mm down to 4mm, so might be worth trying a different length,

Everyone is very friendly here and no question is considered 'silly', so please feel free to ask away! 🙂

Welcome to the forums Lisa 🙂

Welcome to the forum Lisa 🙂

I'm currently using 4mm but I think at my next review I'll see if they can change them🙂

Thanks for all the welcomes and replies.

I've not quite got the hang of putting postings up yet so bear with me.

In answer to some questions.

Prior to insulin, I started off being diet controlled, for six months then went onto metformin, then gliclazide, then sitagliptin, then went onto humalog mix then onto the types of insulin I'm on now😱 Been round the houses.

Re slow onset, honestly don't know. Dr thinks I'm type 1 but is about 90% sure, but I don't fully fit the boxes.
