Hi Danny
do you know what your HbA1c was when you were diagnosed? This is a good starting point as to where you are and how much you have to adapt things to manage the condition.

Welcome to the forum Danny
Is that:
8 first thing in the moring.
6.5 2 hours after breakfast (pretty good!)
5.4 before lunch
8 - 10 three hours after lunch.

Hi @Danny, sounds like your diabetes has been caught early on if you are borderline. Reducing your carb intake will help enormously and should prevent you from developing full-blown Type 2. Cutting down on bread, potatoes, rice and pasta as well as sugary foods will help. It would be great if you could reduce your blood sugar naturlly and not have to face going onto medication for it.

No Adrian the only number the nurse gave me was 147 and I had no idea what she was talking about she said it was boarder line and I had to cut out carbs and they will retest I three months

That’s correct Ralph but today it was 8 first thing then 10.8 one hour after having a cup a soup for breakfast I have been out fly fishing all day tested myself when I got home at 4 pm and it was 6.9 as of yet I can’t get my head around it

That sounds like a slightly misheard HbA1c. Normal is under 42, 48 and over is regarded as diabetic, so 47 is very much borderline. And I think it's normal to have another test in 3 months, especially for a value like 47. (3 months is usual since HbA1c measures changes to blood cells which typically live for a bit over 3 months.)

Now that makes sense Bruce thanks for that

Welcome to the forum @Danny

Great that you have a BG meter, and are already able to see the effect of eating different foods on your BG levels.

Many members of the forum stick to checking BG before and again 2hrs after the first bite of the meal. Ideally the difference between the two would be 2-3mmol/L or less. If you are seeing big rises then trying reducing the amount of carbohydrate in that meal next time, or switching to a different carb source (some people find they never get on with certain types), can really help.

Of course, while food will be probably having the biggest effect, there are many other factors which can affect your BG levels, so don’t be surprised if you get a few head-scratching moments!
