Hi Katie, welcome to the forum 🙂 It's a good idea to get back to basics when you have been diagnosed a long time - many of our members have learned a surprising amount despite many years of diabetes, and often it is because all those around them - health care professionals included - assume that they must already 'know everything'.

How have things been going for you lately, to make you come to this decision, and what sort of regime are you on? Please feel free to join in, and ask any questions you may have - I'm sure you will find lots of people happy and willing to share their experiences with you. You might also be interested in Circle D, which is a network of groups of 18-30 year olds who meet regularly for social outings - more information here: http://www.circledrocks.co.uk/

I look forward to hearing more from you! 🙂

thanks all 🙂

Northerner - that is definitely the case....I have discovered so many things that have changed in how you are told to manage t1 diabetes since I was diagnosed. being so young everything was taught to my parents and I followed them, then it all just becomes 'normal' and months, become years and before you know it you 'manage' your diabetes by just doing injections and not really knowing how you ended up there.

one thing that shocked me was when I went to see a dsn about a year ago (until then all I'd had was yearly consultations with my diabetes doctor) we spoke about hypos and when I was diagnosed we were told to have lucozade or a mars bar, so imagine my shock when I was told the treatment for a hypo was orange juice - I'd never been told not to have OJ and used to have one every morning thinking I was being healthy lol

I am on novorapid 3 times a day (plus all the adjustment injections) and lantus in the evening. I've been monitoring my blood sugar levels excessively for the past 3 weeks and keeping a diary of injections, my BG and food....I figured it was somewhere to start with trying to re-educate myself.

I know all about Circle D, but unfortunately there's not a group in my area (Essex). There has just been one set up for parents and I'm hoping it will gather more interest from young people actually trying to live with t1 diabetes.

I'm recently married and we'd like to start trying for a family next year so I know that I really need to sort out my diabetes - I don't think I'd be able to live with myself if my lack of control had an affect on a potential child :( my most recent HBA1c I think was 9.6 so I need to sort that out.

weird how easy you can spill your life to strangers online hey?! lol

Hi Katie, I was diagnosed just two years ago and had very good care from the beginning, so it has been interesting to me here to read the stories of those diagnosed a while ago. I'm on novorapid and lantus too and have been doing quite well, with the odd blip! I'd recommend that you try and get hold of a copy of Ragnar Hanas' Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults which should bring you right up to date on all the current thinking.

We have an active pregnancy section here, so that might be useful to browse - we have had several members announce their pregnancies here, describe the ups and downs, and introduce their lovely new babies! :D

We also arrange meet ups around the country, so you would be more than welcome to pop along - see 'Events'

Bless ya huni ...i can total identify with thing about the OJ ...i thought i was doing the right thing by having only fresh OJ or apple juice eating lots of 'heathy' food ..dried fruit not crisps fruity yoghurts etc etc... not realising how much SUGAR they have in them ...until i started testing ..not fair is it !!as you are a type 1 from what i have gathered here is that its all about carb counting ...and injecting appropriately which makes sense to me .... learn away and good luck with your family making x🙂 as a T2 just cant do much fruit these days ...but rasberrys oooo cant resist x🙂

Hey Katie welcome to the forum. I'm 22 and have had type 1 for almost 20 years. It sounds like you're taking some really positive steps in terms of managing your diabetes - keep at it!! And ask us as many questions as you like 🙂

Hi Shiv,

As another diabetic whose grown up with the illness, did you maintain good control throughout the transition of when your management went from your parents to you? I think this is where my problems started without me really realising it.

and thanks everyone else 🙂

Hi Katie and welcome to the forum.🙂

My son is 12 and uses an insulin pump - control is much better. It sounds like your trying really hard to get your hba1c down which is great as you need to get it down for any pregnancies. There are lots of pregnant ladies on here who will be abe to advise you.🙂Bev

Keeping a record of what's going on can be very helpful. I began a push for tighter control in Feb this year and it really helped.

Are there any EEEEEHHHHHH?! issues in particular you are struggling with, or any regular wobbles (high or low) that you want to iron out?

Might be best if you just ask a few questions or jot down a few scenarios that you are trying to get your head around to see if anyone here has been through the same thing.

Hi Katie.

I'm another one who has been trying to take back control recently after a long time of being on auto pilot.

We now have 2 noteboooks crammed with many weeks of testing, carbs, insulin and exercise to show the DSN next week. There is so much you can learn from being on here.
Good luck with the re-education process. 🙂

Rob
