hello my name is Ian . My daughter was diagnosed with type one just over a year ago and as me and her mum are separated things have got really difficult .I struggled to get training on how to look after my daughters diabetes and have come to a point where I need to get a nurse to show me how to give insulin injections. My exhaust stopped contact because I’m not fully trained up and I need to see my daughter with a nurse to get past this point can anyone help xx

Hi Ian,

that's sounds like an unfortunate situation.....

how old is your daughter..?

it would be good for you to get educated on all the ins and outs of the condition and on how to care for your daughter and I would imagine that service will be provided by your daughters diabetes team.....has that training been difficult to get then?

is it not also possible to sit down with your ex and go through what needs to be done?

However, if you have joint custody legally - I do not see any reason why your daughter's medical team would not train you - if you approach them and ask. Have you?

Hi Ian and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear you are struggling to get training. Although not helpful with regard to how to remedy that, we do recommend an excellent book that helps parents understand Type 1 management. It is called Type 1 Diabetes in Children and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It isn't cheap, but is really clear and explains everything very well.

Hi Ian, have you spoken to your daughters GP? If that’s not an option then maybe contact your local PALs (patient liaison) to see if they can help?

Cathy - her diabetes care will be undertaken by the hospital not her GP. GPs are not T1 diabetes experts and the care of children with T1 generally is far too complex to be consigned to GPs - growth hormones, no 'routine' etc etc.

Ah, thanks Jenny. I hope perhaps the hospital PALs team can help
