Hi I'am new to this still trying to get my head round being told I've type 2, have so many questions. Like should I be self testing if so can I get test strips on prescription. It's all a bit hard to take in.

Welcome Muzzie.

I'll move your post to Newbies, where it will stay nearer the top of the board for longer.

Our Useful links thread has some pointers to useful information to get you started. Many people recommend the book "Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year" by Gretchen Becker.

Getting blood glucose test strips on prescription is a hot topic, and GPs vary in their approach. The best strategy is to show your GP that you can use strips to improve your control, rather than get anxious over results.

Hi Muzzie, welcome to the forum 🙂 Some very useful resources are available to help you understand your diabetes so you can learn to manage it and live life without it trying to dominate you. Have a look in our Useful links thread - I'd recommend in particular Maggie Davey's letter to newly diagnosed Type 2s and Jennifer's good advice, and an excellent book, recommended by many of our members Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker.

All the above would recommend testing of your blood sugar levels so you can get an idea of how different food and activity affects you, and most of our members would agree.

That should be enough to keep you going, but if there is anything in particular that is confusing or concerning you, please do ask and we'll try our bet to help - no question is considered 'silly'! 🙂

Hi that helps a lot many thanks

Hi Muzzie
Welcome to the forum. I am new too! I have found some of the most supportive people here with a wealth of experience and tips. I am most grateful for that! I have also been able to speak to a couple of other newbies and that has been nice too! My advice would be to read the material that Northerner has posted at the top of the Newbies section. I also bought the Gretchen Becker book and have skimmed through a lot of it. It is very helpful. Don't feel afraid to ask anything - I have asked loads and it has helped enormously! It feels like there is so much to learn, but the support here is invaluable and no-one makes you feel like you're a pain to keep asking! I hope you find the site as useful and supportive as I do. Good to have you on board!🙂 Katie

Hi Muzzie. Welcome. 🙂

Hi Muzzie, also a newbie, totally confused so just ordered some books that have been recommend by Northener🙂

Hi Muzzie and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome to the forum Muzzie 🙂

Hi Muzzie and welcome from a fellow Type 2. You've had some excellent advice already and the links Northener has given you should keep you busy for a while. My advice would be to not try and know everything at once, take things one step at a time and don't be too hard on yourself. Take care and keep in touch. XXXXX

Hi Muzzie, another newby - can't really tell you anything that hasn't already been mentioned except 'be kind to yourself'. Take care Amanda 🙂

Hi Muzzie, another newbie her. Welcome to the forum.

Just take your time, dont try and take it all in and slowly absorb what information you can. The advice on here is excellent and as are some of the books recommended.

I am seeing my nurse next week and am going to ask about the strips, seems each surgery is different.

Hi thanks for that, like I said it's only been 3 week's head buzzing already had my eye's done that's OK. I've also been put on tablets( Metformin 1 X 500mg a day) It just all seem`s so quick

It can be very overwhelming at first. I went from someone who never went to the doctor's and had a handful of paracetamol a year to a seemingly endless round of GP, nurse, clinic, podiatrist, retinal scans. Things did settle down eventually though, and I am now probably in much better shape thanks to all the checks I receive. It can be heartening to know that many people find that they end up being much healthier and happier once they have got to grips with it than they might have been without the diagnosis - I hope the same will be true of you 🙂

Welcome Muzzie you have come to the right place for help and support. 🙂
