Hello, I'm a new member today whose husband has diabetes and I'm looking forward to reading lots of new recipes and other foodie tips to help with the condition.

Hi Barbara

I am new too, just joined today with suspected Type 2 diabetes. I am also looking for recipes. If anyone has a curry recipe suitable for someone with not only diabetes but high cholesterol that would be wonderful as I do enjoy a curry, I could have it without rice. 🙂

I imagine most curries are suitable. What kind would you normally like?

Welcome to the forum @Barbara R 🙂

Glad you have found us!

There are loads of tasty curries that you can make or adjust and adapt. If you are concerned about the amount of saturated fat you are consuming (which can raise cholesterol levels) then you might want to avoid varieties with coconut milk or ghee, but it’s perfectly possible to have a cracking curry that works well with your diabetes.

Some people choose to reduce the carbohydrate content by choosing cauliflower ‘rice’ as an accompaniment.

There are some handy tips in this ‘Enjoy Food’ downloadable guide

There’s no ‘one size fits all’ way of eating that works for everyone. Some have success with low calorie, others aim for moderate or low carb. It’s all about working out what works well for your body, your individual diabetes, and fits in with you as a whole person 🙂

These meal planners have some great ideas

If you are confident to make with individual spices then you can make them low carb, but there are the curry pastes (Pataks) are pretty good or pre-prepared curry sauces in a jar Punjaban is one I have found which is low carb.
My favourite is cauliflower, butternut squash and chick pea and you can add either paneer or boiled eggs if you want.
Or any meat with aubergine is good.

Most curry sauces and pastes are relatively low in carbs considering how much is used per portion of a whole curry dish. The vast majority of carbs in a curry come from the rice. But check each one for yourself. Obviously veg curries can be much higher in carbs than meat or fish versions because neither meat not fish contains carbs in the basic ingredient.

Thank you for all the helpful information regarding curry sauces, thats really helpful. I was just thinking its like my body was aware I can tolerate carbs as for the last few months have been declining rice and chips with meals (i actually dont like chips) because I feel full before I eat. Apparently the full up feeling can be another symptom of diabetes

I've never heard that before - but being 100% honest it must be that long since I last actually felt hungry - though I can still remember having hunger pangs and my tum 'growling' at me in protest cos it was empty and needed filling.
