Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Just got confirmation of Type 2 and overwhelmed by the range of advice on YouTube- not just range but contradictory. Hoping this forum will help me navigate these guidelines. Diet is the priority as I am not overweight but a lover of fine dining.

Hi @Tsingtax and welcome to the forum 🙂 Were you given your hba1c? It's helpful with any questions you may have. If you're not overweight, it may be worth asking your GP for extra checks to make sure T2 is the correct diagnosis.
Cutting down on all carbs as well as sweet stuff is very helpful in reducing blood glucose, but if you're not overweight you'll need extra protein and fat to avoid any weight loss.
 
Prompt response appreciated. I am 80kg and I think my HbA1c is 48 (?). I have been prescribed 500mg Metformin twice a day. My anxiety is the contradictory advice I am getting but it is good to hear from a real patient. Thank you.
 
The best advice I've found is on this forum. If you start googling you're into a minefield and even the NHS isn't consistent on advice!
At 48 you are only just into the range, so a few tweaks to carbs should help.
 
It is perfectly possible to reduce your HbA1C from 48mmol/mol which is really only just in the diabetic zone so I am surprised you have been prescribed metformin before being given the opportunity to make some lifestyle changes, primarily dietary.
You can still enjoy fine dining but will just need to make some good food choices.

Hi @Tsingtax and welcome to the forum. We normally encourage members not to include information from which they can be easily identified although having looked you up, I'm guessing you have strategies in place for dealing with anybody seeking you out with a view to exploiting your diabetes diagnosis.

We are of similar age and build and to some extent do not fit the stereotype for a T2 diagnosis. I put my diabetes down to ageing and for some reason or other my pancreas does not work as well as it once did. I doubt if it is packing up completely, it's just getting on a bit. My approach, which seems to be effective for me, is not to overburden my system. I cut back on carbohydrates using a blood glucose meter to judge the effect on my blood glucose, until I got into a position where my base levels and post eating rises were within bounds and then have generally stuck to the routines I developed.

I eat three fairly simple meals a day with a light supper. By simple I mean single course which might in itself be quite complicated. In essence I spread my food out during the day, giving my system chance to deal with one lot before piling in any more. This way I have not had to make vast changes in my diet. I have eliminated a few things (mostly anything wheat flour based) and changed portions on others a that's about it. My latest HbA1c has just crept back into the diabetes zone. I am not panicking about it, just recognising that it might need attention in the next year or so, probably by medication. This works for me but as we keep saying on the forum there are many approaches to getting blood glucose under control so read around the forum and work out what will suit you.

Hi and welcome. Hopefully with some changes to diet and exercise as well as the metformin you’ll soon have your a1c down again. How tall are you? Unless you’re particularly tall or muscly I’d guess your BMI is at the top end of normal with a weight of 80kgm so losing a little bit of weight to get more towards a mid range bmi could be worth considering too?
