Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but great that you have found us. Diabetes can be a confusing and frustrating business, and it can really help to have somewhere to ask questions, offload, vent or simply share experiences and be in touch with others facing the same challenges each day.
Stories and experiences to inspire and encourage you, and shoulders to lean on when it all gets a bit much.
It can feel overwhelming to begin with, so take things steady, and be kind to yourself.
You might find the Learning Zone really helpful as it is full of information (orange tab in the main menu). Members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter to the Newly Diagnosed and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which you can work through gradually and will give you a solid starting point.
Thx for yr reply. I've known I'm diabetic since late last yr when had blood test and my level was 68. Had repeat in Feb and it's now 66 so pleased it's coming down. I've been reducing my carbs to any 180g/ day so that's obviously helping. I use mynet.Diary to log all I eat and check my carbs + fats there. I've used this app to count calories for ages trying to loose wt so I find it useful.
This site is very useful tho - my Diabetic Nurse has just suggested it
Hello and welcome
As you have already started to reduce your carbs, I'm going to suggest you slowly continue to reduce them to 130gm a day or less, which is what is suggested for Type 2. That way, you will hopefully see a bit more of a reduction over the next few months. I've reduced mine by having more veggies: lots of cauliflower, mashed, riced, with cheese sauce: carrot/swede puree: Roasted squash chunks or wedges.
If you have been put on Metformin, it can have side effects - cramps, the runs, constipation. It can settled down after a few weeks, or you can ask for the slow release which is kinder on the tummy. If you work, the last thing you want is to be running to the loo all day. It's best taken in the middle of a meal - a sort of pill sandwich!! Best wishes
Ooh thx for the advice re 130g carbs / day. I'll certainly gradually do that. And the bit ABT Metformin pill sandwich lol. The diab nurse mentioned ABT slow release Metformin if I get the runs etc. I'm only going on once a day so I'm hoping my gut can cope lol. I'm actually retired but still don't fancy the need to run anywhere.
Thx very much for yr advice
