Hi i am Don a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic.
I don't have my education classes until April and am struggling to work out what is good for breakfast in the meantime.
can anyone advise me on good cereal or any good cereal bars?

Welcome! I had this problem when I was diagnosed back in September. I was told there isnt really any cereal that is ok except maybe porridge. You will need to experiment as not everyone is the same but a simple bowl of cornflakes doubled my blood sugars in two hours. I have wholemeal toast every day except Sunday now when it’s bacon and eggs but I can’t even tolerate marmalade on the toast. Testing is the only surefire way to tell what spikes you or not. Others on here have smoothies and fruit and so on but I couldn’t handle that first thing.

Testing is the easiest way to find out in my view.

Most of us tend to be more insulin resistant in the mornings, which means it takes less carbohydrates to send you high. It's a bit of a caveman effect. For this reason I tend to try keeping my breakfast below 10g/carb if I can.

Most cereals are fairly high in carb, so you could maybe have a couple of spoons of them. Self made porridge is apparently ok, but avoid the pre-made stuff! You might get away with muesli. A single slice of burgan plus chunky peanut butter I found ok too. I tend to go for some walnuts plus low-carb yogurt as that's fairly quick to do. Eggs and bacon is good when I can be bothered (usually when I'm on holiday).

All of us are unique, so what work's for one might not work for another.
 
Welcome Don, the best thing you can do is get a testing kit. Ask your doctor, you never know they may give you one. Mine did, but many don't. In which case buy one if you can.

In the meantime I would recommend good old bacon and eggs, or high meat content sausage. I make up a big omelette then cut a chunk off it each morning, warm it, either in a frying pan or microwave, with a slice of bacon or a sausage (also pre cooked) and a spoonful of low sugar beans or chopped tomatoes. Or if you prefer, a slice of burgen bread, toasted and buttered (butter, not marg). There are lots of other options but that should keep you going for a while.

if you need to have breakfast on the run, protein bars ( I like the Nature Valley peanut and salted caramel) might be a good option, only 10g of carb, and it goes into your system more slowly because of the protein and fats in the bar.
 
Hello and welcome, Don. Lots of good advice already - I've always found breakfast the trickiest meal too. For me, eggs are a good option and I occasionally add in a slice of Burgen soy and linseed bread (toasted) with butter and Marmite. The Burgen is available at most supermarkets. Hadn't heard of the Nature Valley protein bars, Robin but will give them a try, thanks. You do need to test to find out what suits you.
