Diagnosed 10 days ago (age 60 & both my parents were t2 & younger bro aged 54 diagnosed last year) so not really a shock. Hoping to control with diet & exercise at least to begin with!
Hi DD, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sounds like quite a strong genetic link there, how did you come to be diagnosed? I would recommend having a browse of our 'Useful Links' thread for some good ideas for further reading. Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, in particular, comes highly recommended by many of our members 🙂
If you have any questions, please ask, and someone is bound to be able to help out - no questions is considered 'silly', so if it is bothering you then just ask away 🙂
Thanks for welcome! Useful links,! Diagnosed from fasting blood test following high liver function tests last year - worried that history will repeat - diagnosed with gallstones last summer _ my mum went into hospital for removal of gall bladder but they then realised she had pancreatic cancer & died at age 66 - word ,"pancreas" is jumping out at me from all literature I am reading about diabetes! Seeing diabetic nurse for 2nd appt tomorrow so will talk to her about my fears!
Hi and welcome to the forum, I'm sure you'll find lots of good advice. I know more about the type 1 side of things, but my Mum was also diagnosed with type 2 at the age of 60 and controls it with diet and exercise, so I do have some insights. Great name btw!!
Although you said your type 2 diagnosis wasn't really a shock to you, it still must have shaken you up, and understandably you have worries linked to your Mum's experiences. If I were you I would explain to your GP about your family history, and ask if you could be screened for pancreatic cancer to put your mind at rest - the doc would likely refer you for a blood test and ultrasound scan. Hope all is well 🙂
Did have an ultrasound last Sep when diagnosed with gallstones - the radiographer was brilliant when I told her about my Mum and checked pancreas, spleen, liver & kidneys but yes I will ask for a blood test for pancreatic advanced - it makes sense!
