Finally diagnosed yesterday, straight onto Metformin.

I knew this day was coming but my brain still won't accept that this is now my life - if that makes sense!?!?!

I've been looking aound the internet and know that this isn't a life sentence if I deal with it.🙂

Hi gillianre, and welcome to the forums.

It is a bit daunting and scary at first but you are right, it's not a life sentence and you can have a normal life still. It does take time to get your head round the diagnosis and to learn what you need to be doing now.

You've made a good start by joining here as you've now tapped into a wealth of eperience and advice from people who know exactly how you are feeling. Ask about anything you need to know and someone will be around to help.

Just a quick question for you though. Are you able to test your own levels? I know most Type 2's are told they don't need to, especially on Metformin as they are told you can't hypo on Metformin. Most of us do think it's necessary to test though to find out what foods suit you best now.

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you better. Take care. XXXX

Hi and welcome gillianre , from another newbie. Lots to learn but you have come to the right place.

Welcome to the forums gillianre 🙂

Hi Gill and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome to the forum Gillianre 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis but hopefully you will be able to get things under good control and quite possibly end up feeling fitter and healthier than you have for some time! 🙂

I was told that I didn't need to test my levels but as my mum is diabetic too she had a new meter that I can/have been using, otherwise how am I going to know if what I eat causes my levels to spike if I don't test my blood?!?!?!

How indeed!? It seems impossible to me that this simple logic has evaded many GPs, and I wonder how many of them would not bother testing if they were diagnosed? 🙄

Welcome to the forum Gillian,

I've been on the type 2 journey since October 2009 (well, that's when I was diagnosed, I suspect I was working my way up to the full symptoms for probably 10 years or so!).

The good news is that it is possible to end up feeling so much healthier if you can get good control. I know I certainly do!

Good luck,

Andy 🙂
