Type 2
Hi all

I've joined today and first time posting. I have had type 2 for a number of years and have been keeping a check on my blood sugars for the past couple with nothing particularly significant happening

I was discharged from hospital following an asthma attack yesterday evening knowing my blood sugars were high due to the amount of steroid I've been taking and knowing I should monitor. My latest glucose reading was 16.8 with a possible ketone warning. I've done a ketone finger print test which was only 0.3 which I believe is normal. Am I correct here? Will obviously have an appointment with astma/diabetic nurse on Monday but assume that provided my ketone is under 1.5 I don't need to do anything urgently? Have I understood this correctly or is this overstepping what can be said on the forum. If so sorry

Welcome to the forum
Do you have the product leaflet with your ketone test strips as that should have a guide but 0.3 I think is OK but worth keeping a eye on it if your blood glucose continues to be high or if you start to feel unwell as that could indicate DKA otherwise taking action to reduce blood glucose, drinking plenty. How you handle your carb intake will depend on what medication you may be taking.
Steroids are well known for increasing blood glucose as is being unwell. Are you on steroids all the time as you may need medication adjusting to better manage blood glucose or look at your diet.

Thank you. That's reassuring. Yes my leaflet does suggest under 0.6 is the normal for a non diabetic adult and gives a couple of examples of what tondo if its over 1.5. Really appreciate you taking the time to reply

That would be my understanding too. The warnings that meters give out aren’t tailored to your individual circumstances, so might be causing you some additional anxiety :(. I believe the warning flags are more intended for T1s or other people with diabetes who have absolute insulin deficiency where 13+ and no insulin can fairly quickly turn nasty.

DKA can happen in people with T2 but it is not as common as I understand it. If you have reasonable levels of circulating insulin (because you are more insulin resistant, than insulin deficient) I think worrying ketones are less likely?

I think that the 'ketone warning' might just have been an alert that you should check your ketone level based on your blood glucose number, not an actual 'you have high ketones' warning. It is a subtle difference but probably significant for those seeing the display.

Thanks everyone. Although higher than usual my levels are a little lower today. I appreciate all your help

Steroids although necessary are a nightmare on blood sugars. Glad yours are coming down
