Hi everyone,
I was originally diagnosed with gestational diabetes in my last pregnancy around 14 years ago due to being 39 at the time. This year when I had my blood tests done my levels were 49 they brought me back a month later and they had gone up to 50 ! So I was duly sent to see the diabetic nurse who offered me the TDR to try and reverse the diagnosis.
So I can’t say I was looking forward to 800 calories a day milkshake diet but needs must!
Last week was my first week list 10.6lb but it was hard I had to eat a small bowl of salad on Sunday as I was very low, very light headed and had black spots in my vision.

Monday this week marked the beginning of week 2, and I must admit that Iv found myself less hungry this week !

Like most women I like to jump on the scales mid week to see how much progress I’d made however Iv just jumped on and it’s telling me Iv put a kg back on ?? All Iv had in my milkshake and 2.5L of water a day ??? Is this normal ? Please tell me this is normal or I think il cry

I think with an HbA1C of just over the diagnostic threshold then the very low calorie shakes is like using a sledge hammer to crack a hazelnut.
Following a low carb regime with normal food keeping to no more than 130g carbs not just sugar per day should see a reduction in HbA1C in 3 months back towards normal. It is then a regime that can become a new normal way of eating and will be much more enjoyable than the shakes and soups regime. Hi @KathyH72 and welcome to the Forum. I agree with above, a low carb regime looks like a much better alternative to soups and shakes and far more sustainable and enjoyable 🙂 . Do let us know how you get on.

Unless you have lots of weight to lose the low calorie diet is rather severe.
Low calorie never worked for me and I regret trying it last year as it seems to have disrupted my routine and my HbA1c was higher than expected - plus my waistline has increased - I always reacted badly to low calorie diets in the past but I thought I'd try it just to see if I could reduce my HbA1c, but I suspect that the carbs were too easily available. My normal diet is very low carb and I was seeing my waist shrinking, but when I changed to my summer wardrobe I found many of the clothes tight around the waist.
As your HbA1c at diagnosis was only just over the threshold I'd have thought that an analysis of your carb intake and using a blood glucose tester to see what your after meal levels were would have been an easier option - it brought my levels down from 91 at diagnosis so it is usually very effective for ordinary type 2s.

Good to hear that you’ve been feeling less hungry in week 2.

I think one of the benefits of the programme is that it has a fairly well defined duration, and can act as a reset, both for the metabolism and also a person’s relationship with food. As long as people transition to a maintenance menu which retains the weight loss, many participants have been able to eat a varied and flexible diet afterwards.

If I recall correctly, with the initial trial participants, those who started the programme sooner after diagnosis had greater chance of success, than those with a longer duration of diabetes - so ‘striking while the iron is hot’ could well be a good plan on the part of your nurse 🙂

Yes, normal: fluid retention.
