Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, I've just recently been diagnosed with Type 2 ... have been pre diabetic from 2015 and was able to keep Type 2 at bay with diet and exercise. I'm 44 and still carrying weight. I'm on metformin 500mg twice a day... mostly I feel fine but I've had 2 episodes were I have had real hunger pangs and get really shaky and lightheaded is this normal? Checked my bloods at that time 5.3, as far as I'm aware isn't low I could be wrong.....On my medication now for 3 weeks and the nurse doesn't want to see me for three months no real advice or help offered. Any advice much appreciated...thanks

How high was yourHbA1C and Blood Glucose before?
If it was a lot higher before then 5.3 could easily be low enough for what is known as a false Hypo. The body gets used to so much glucose in the bloodstream that when it drops down to a normal level it feels as though it is dangerously low.
Situations like that go away as the body becomes more used to more normal BG levels.
Met5forminvery rarely causes BG to go low enough to cause a hypo, but could theoretically do so when combined with extreme exercise, because Metformin partially inhibits the liver from dumping glucose into the bloodstream, thus dropping BG due to exercise doesn't automatically bounce due to a liver dump of glucose.

Thank you this makes sense.... I was also just back from doing 5k walk. My Hba1c pre diabetic was between 43-48 .. then July Hba1c 50 then 52 my at home BG readings when fasting 7.9-8 the highest recording was 12.9... feeling all sorts of emotions anxious, down, denial, angry and just don't know were to begin as I want to try my best and manage this.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis @C.Don79

Be kind to yourself. You didn’t set out to aim for this deliberately, and the stigma and blame that can surround type 2 diabetes is unfair and unjustified (as well as extremely unhelpful!).

The torrent of feelings you have been feeling are actually quite common with a diagnosis of a long term condition like diabetes - some people liken it to a form of grieving, with all the torrent of emotions (anger, denial, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) that can involve, in any order and sometimes all on the same day.

So don’t give yourself a hard time for the way are feeling - it will take a while for you to adjust. But ultimately diabetes is something that can usually be managed well with a few tweaks to the menu and any meds that are helpful to support in-range BGs for as long as they are needed.

@kay88 - yes plenty of people. So - what tests are 'your lot' saying they're going to do, to find out which, and have they started you on any medications, diet etc in the meantime?

It has been a bit much - so I went to the Gp to be tested for something completely different and then got a text saying i had type 2 Diabetes! The shock and the sheer horror!
They then called me and wanted me to test for keytones in my urine but I wasnt having any symptoms! I did my own keytones test and it was negative. The nurse keeps calling me from the surgery and her and my Gp are giving me conflicting advice. I dont even want to engage at this point. They dont seem to be sure if I have it or what type i have...i have another blood test tomorrow - not even sure because I cannot get clear advice

Sending strength. I totally empathise with your feelings. Tbh I've seen many an 'expert' over the years and they all seem to differ in advice, plus some don't have any! As for type, for ease it's always 1 or 2 but their are many subdivisions and we all respond differently to the eating plans and medications. It's a 'one fits all' approach in the main. It is hard to engage at times, but necessary. Maybe change your diabetic support if you don't rate them? It's important to trust. Best of luck

Someone will have rang you to make an appointment to book that blood test. Just ask them what the test is for when they ask you to go for a blood test. Or get the NHS app then you can see what tests have been ordered and what the results are yourself.

Thank you! Glad I found this forum...it is all very overwhelming and stressful...at the moment ...I haven't told my family yet just a friend....well I will come back and let you know how it goes...!
