Hi everyone please can you help us , my husband has recently reconnected with his daughter who is 14 and has been diagnosed with type 1 for six years . Can you please recommend any course/books that we could use to help us understand the minefield that is type one diabetes and what she has to live and go through on a daily basis .
Kind regards
Cheryl

Welcome to the forum @Wadeybunch29

i would definitely recommend the book Type 1 diabetes in children adolescents and young adults by Ragnar Hanas. It is so clear and easy to read. It is also regularly updated With the latest tech.

The key information that would be of use to you, and to us in helping us to answer any questions that you have, is to find out whether she is on Multiple Daily Injections (MDI) or an insulin pump, does she have a Libre sensor which enables her to monitor her glucose levels with far fewer finger pricks. These things may sound like a foreign language at present (as they did to each of us at the start) but perhaps just aske her to explain her experience of living with T1. It is a full time ‘job’ on top of whatever else you have to do but it is manageable.

have a read around and come back with any questions. There is loads of experience to tap into and no questions are considered silly on here. just ask.

Diabetes UK has a great Learning Zone which will help you understand diabetes, especially the difference between Type 1 and type 2 and that, nowadays, Type 1 diabetes does not have to be a hindrance to a normal life. I have lived with the condition for more than 15 years and consider managing it is just part of my life rather than something I have to “live and go through on a daily basis” which seems a rather negative view.

You will probably learn a lot from your husband’s daughter. At 14 she is likely to be able to describe her management regime and what kind of assistance she would like.

Sorry to hear about your husband’s daughter’s T1.

Do you know whether she is on injections or an insulin pump? Does she use Libre sensors, or a different Continuous Glucose Monitor?

John Walsh / Ruth Roberts ’Using Insulin’ or especially ‘Pumping Insulin’ are also very well regarded on the forum.

For CGM and/or Libre there is a series of very helpful videos here:

It’s very very early days for us so we are unsure of all the dynamics yet but determined to have the knowledge and understanding to help her in anyway we can . I really appreciate that it will be very difficult for her mum and family when we do eventually have time with Bens daughter on our own so we want to have the knowledge and understanding so that we can all work together and for her family to be reassured that we know what we are doing during these times . I have ordered the recommend books and looks at the various information that’s been given .
All your help is very much appreciated xx
