Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
hi!
i've only just found this site, but i've had diabetes for like a year now 🙂
i'm really hoping that it will be a great source of support and advice if i have any problem :D
i have good control, my last HbA1c was 5.7 % but... before i got diagnosed, i signed up for a school trip to south america for a month, and decided to still go after my diagnosis!
and i am due to go in around 2 weeks, and suddenly i'm really nervous about my diabetes out there :(
and i don't want any of the group to treat me diffentely.
has anybody had any problems in customs?
or with keeping insulin cool?

Hi Beth and welcome to the forum, well done on the good control and an excellent hbA, May i ask how old you are? i'm sure the people you go with will be fine and if you get any funny looks or any funny comments just say mind your own business.I cant give any advice on keeping insulin cool or customs but someone will be along soon to help you out.

Welcome onboard

Welcome, Beth
I might be able to help, especially with your trip to South America. Although I was diagnosed as a young adult, I have led expeditions and travelled widely in Latin America. I also had a young lad with diabetes in my group on an expedition to South Greenland, and memories of his coping strategies helped me when I was diagnosed a few years later. I must admit, that I share your desire to not be treated any differently, and I have found a few tips that might help you, too.
Can I ask a few more details? If you prefer, please use PM, instead.
Where are you going - country / countries / altitudes etc?
What activities are you doing?
What sort of accommodation / food?
Hope you like rice, beans and tortillas!
Hope you know some Spanish / Portuguese / French / Dutch, depending on where you're going - or local English for Guyana, Belize etc. Have a great trip.

Hi Beth

Welcome to the forum, I hope that you have a lovely trip. I've been on holiday a few times since my diagnosis and have never had any problems with customs x

hey copepod 🙂
i'm going to venezuela, and i think we're trekking up a mountain, but not too high.
we'll be trekking for a while, then working with a communtiy out there, building something i think 🙂 and then we're going to the beaches and towns for the last bit.
What sort of accommodation / food?
we're camping for some of it, staying in hotels and hostels for other bits 🙂

it would be great if you had any advice, thank you 🙂
