Hello Just been diagnosed but since Christmas lost 3.5 stone I am calorie counting but work shifts so not tge best allways hungry lol not on diet just cutting down but not sure what's good and bad any advice many thanks

So many newbies. Often who tried to do all the right things. My weight and bloods regularly checked. A little overweight(to what I wanted to be)but the nurses, Dr's and consultants never said..."Hey you need to lose weight"

I maintained my weight. Often more likely to lose it. Never add to it. I was half a stone to a stone down overall anyhow.

Generally now being diagnosed as pre diabetic by chance...I am down again. If anyone follows BMI measurements anymore. I am in the healthy range for my height.

Another 7lbs-14lbs I will be virtually in the middle. It won't do me any harm. It could help. I eat right. Small portions. Always did.
Like many and yourself. Learning my way around this new situation. Wishing you the very best.

To control my diabetes I went low carb and suddenly found I could not stand up without my clothes sliding south - I had lost weight breaking all the rules of dieting.
I tried low calorie diets for half a century without success but you can't tell a GP or dietician that their advice is wrong without them getting stroppy. These days I can eat more calories than I used to when on a low fat high carb diet and my waist is still reducing and my shape changing - I make a lot of my clothes and have had to remake the good stuff several times since diagnosis.
Although I only eat twice a day my first meal can be steak or a chop and mushrooms or stirfry - even bacon and eggs.

I can second @Drummer's advice about the low carb option. It's not so much about the calories, but the carb intake. As it happens I do both carb and calorie counting, but that's only because at 5' nothing and 7.5 stones, I only expend around 1300 calories per day so I need to be watchful. When I see signs up saying the average adult needs 2,000 calories, my blood boils! That's why I walk around 18k steps daily to up the calorie burn to 1800 to give me some leeway in my diet.

What should we eat? Have a look at this and this, two proven ways of healthy eating.
I follow the first and the second may appeal to you.
No need to fell hungry.
Focus on nutritious protein foods, the natural fat that comes with them, and plenty of veg, You will feel full sooner and eat less, and the carbs will take care of themselves.

Welcome to the forum @CHRIS EASTWOOD

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but a huge well done on your weight loss so far! That should really help with your insulin sensitivity.

Were you told the result of your HbA1c at diagnosis? This can help you understand how far into ‘diabetes territory’ you were to begin with, and how significant or modest the changes to your menu might need to be.
