Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi!
How is everyone? I'm having a bit of an issue and would be very grateful to anyone with any experience in this.

I have been type 1 diabetic for 16 years and am 28 years old now.
I'm active, the correct weight and very well controlled with my sugars.
Since 2005 I have not been able to get my blood PRESSURE down and the bottom number won't go under 90 even though I am taking medication! It is constantly being blamed on just being diabetic, which I find hard to accept as I am healthy in every other way!

If anyone knows about this I would love to hear your thoughts please. 🙂

Hi there beau and a warm welcome i cant help on your actual queary but just wanted to welcome you onto the forum x

Hi there and welcome..................

I am 26 and have been D for 12, so similar to you........I have only just recently went on lisinopril for my BP (background retinopathy), I however am heavier than I should be which may also be to blame for my high BP.............but it could also be linked to caffiene intake, salt, smoking..............

Are these any thing that you consume...........?

Welcome to the forum beaufles. 🙂

I see boi has already asked some of the questions I had.

Have you always had good control over your levels or have you had a period where they were high or varying wildly?

Also, your weight may be fine, but do you still exercise regularly?

Andy

Thanks for your comments.

I am also on Lisinipril!
I haven't always been well controlled, everything went a bit wild in my adolescence, it's an unfortunite time to get diabetes as your body is already going through so much.

I am very active and walk for miles daily. I don't smoke or add salt to my food, neither do I eat ready made meals.

I suppose there could be many reasons for high BP that only a doctor could go into, it may be in your genes............how about caffiene, do you drink alot of tea or coffee?

If your eating the right food and excercising sufficiently theres no more you can do really, they could probably up your dose, has this been discussed...

I am on 20g a day, how about you?

I'm not on an incredibly high dose to be honest, I just don't like the fact that at such a young age my body is relying on yet another medication.
The only caffiene I have is the odd diet coke, the rest of the time it's squash. (I'm quite boring really, lol)
So glad I came on here though as there aren't many people around here to talk about this. Thanks 🙂

Well, it looks like you've done everything that I can think of about improving your BP for yourself without medication. Well, there is also the nasty beastie called stress?

I asked about any period of poor level control because that can contribute to all sorts of strange effects due to the damage it can do. But that's best talked about with your GP because I'm not qualified to judge that.

A blood test should confirm levels of other things like cholestorol and the like that might be pushing it up...........if it doesnt go down with the meds this might be investigated.....

I hope you can find the answers...........🙂

Hi Beaufles

Welcome to the forum!

Another question... do you monitor your own BP or only get it done at the surgery? I only ask because we bought one of those clinically-validated arm-cuff monitors (the wrist ones are less reliable apparently) a few months ago when my wife felt a bit funny in the supermarket. There was a special offer in the chemists and it was only ?10 or ?15 I think.

Anyway long-story-short I thought I'd test mine (which was a bit high at my last review) since I've been going to the gym and wondered how well I was getting on. I was horrified to find it way higher than I wanted so started monitoring over a few weeks.

What I found was that it was completely normal morning and evening, but always a bit high at lunchtime (work!). According to my GP this is not unusual (tested high again in the surgery). Morning tests are thought to give a better overall picture.

Might be worth getting yourself a monitor if you haven't already.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try, as when I have it tested I have always had to walk miles either to the hospital or docs surgery! I'm pretty sure my kids crank it up a few notches too! 🙄
