Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone.
I have type 2 and was diagnosed over 10 years ago. I take slow release metformin but I’m not the best at management and even now I forget to take my meds etc. No excuse really but I still don’t prioritise my health need (no lectures please) I have a very stressful job and struggle with depression for which I also take medication. What are your best tips on what has helped you the most x

Welcome to the forum Neleh from a fellow T2.
Do you take your med with or just after food?

Welcome to the forum @Neleh

Glad you have found the forum, bit sorry to hear you sometimes find it hard to prioritise your health :(

Struggles with self-care and mental health often go hand in hand, but you deserve to be happy, healthy and well. I hope joining our friendly and supportive community helps you to take small steps, and improve your diabetes self-management which should in turn have a positive effect on your mood - elevated or erratic BG can have a detrimental effect on mood.

For me one of the things that really helped was beginning to share with people who instinctively ‘got it’, and were facing the same frustrations and struggles every day.

Let us know how you get on, and keep asking questions... we have centuries of lived diabetes experience on the forum, and no matter what it is, someone will have been there, and have their experience to share or be ready to understand and offer support.

... and not one of us is perfect, so you're in very good company!

Welcome to the forum @Neleh . I am glad that you have found us.

The suggestion of sharing with others who get it is also my top tip. This is a good place where I have found plenty of practical advice and loads of support.

To remember taking my meds I have ended up with a weekly box which I top up each Sunday. At least it shows me if I have taken my meds. The box has grown over the years, but I do find it helpful. It doesn’t always work as sometimes it gets buried under loads of stuff on the table, or I simply forgot, because I just do.

Keep in touch.

Hello @Neleh and I hope you find the forum helpful.
My tip for remembering to take the meds, is to set a reminder alarm on my mobile, with a repeat reminder as well in case I ignore the first one!

I have also been living with Type 2 for about 10 years, take slow release metformin, and for many years struggled with trying to balance a stressful job, against time to prioritise my health.
Fortunately I am retired now so have more time now to focus on getting things in balance - but that doesn't always mean that I do!

What helped me most was a visit to the GP when my Hb1Ac had increased and was told that unless I made some changes I could expect to continue to increase my meds and my health would continue to deteriorate.
The wake up call was a motivation to take action. I moved to a Low-Carb eating plan, and found it much easier to follow than I had expected, and the benefits were huge - It gave me a lot more energy, I dropped a dress size, and my self esteem went up a few notches, and I felt much more able to cope with life's stresses.

There have been many ups and downs, and they continue, and as other have said in their messages, help from others in a similar situation are an enormous support, and usually help me get back on track again.
I hope you keep posting and ask any questions and we will always try to help.
