Relationship to Diabetes

Hi All
My blood sugars are constantly over 15 day and night.
According to my GP today my HBAC1 was 101.
Apparently 101 is also bad.
I have really tried to keep to a good low sugar rating

I would like a idea of what others eat.
I cannot eat any salad items or spicy meals due to having Acid Reflux
Or Dairy products and I am lactose intolerant.

Sorry for going on and thank you for your time in reading my moaning

What other carbohydrates have you cut down on? - cos it is not only sugar which affects blood glucose.

Your HbA1C is indeed high but many people here started with levels similar and above.
Have you been given any medication as that might affect the suggestions you get and also do you take any medication for your acid reflux as the sort of things you can eat are things like salads and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs and dairy but if you have a problem with those then lactose free dairy would be an option.
The main thing is to reduce all carbohydrate as they convert into glucose, so things like potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, breakfast cereals as well as the obvious cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks.
It is really useful if people keep a food diary of everything they eat and drink so you can see where some savings can be made.
The thing is to take things day by day and start to make changes by reducing portion size of those high carb foods.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is a really useful guide for carb content of various foods and meals and allows you to make better food choices.
Many people find a low carb (not low fat) approach works in reducing blood glucose and also weight if you need to.
I'm sure a few people will suggest some links which will be helpful as well as the learning zone.

Hi Shunkles, welcome to the forum.

Do you have a blood sugar monitor? It might be worth getting on to check the impact that your meals are having on you. You typically check in the morning before food and two ours after each meal.

As mentioned, sugar isn't the only thing to reduce so could carbs be the issue?

Hi @Shunkles
welcome to the forum, hope you get some good advice on here

yes if your self testing and getting BS levels of over 15 (all day) your Hba1c would show very high also, mine certainly did before I finally got my diabetes under control (mine was also over 100 last Feb)
you will see others who have bought down their Hba1c from as high as yours currently is

I know you say you’ve cut back on sugary foods but what kind of foods are you eating now (I’ve found the key to my Improved control is a not only low sugar but also lower carb foods.
what Meds has your Dr/ DSN put you on ?

Welcome to the forum @Shunkles

Sorry to hear that you are having to balance the needs of your diabetes alongside the needs of your acidreflux and lactose intolerance :(

Many new members find it can be really helpful to keep a food diary for a week or two. Be brutally honest! Note down everything you eat and drink. And note down an estimate of the amount of total carbohydrate (not just ‘of which sugars’) in the meals and snacks. This will give you an idea of which foods are the main sources of carbs in your menu, and it is those which will most likely be causing the biggest rises in your BG levels.

There are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you have probably cut out straight away, but you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits. That’s not to say that you can’t have any of those things again, but moderating portion sizes, and choosing the types of the carbs that suit your body best is a really effective strategy 🙂
