Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone,

Just an obligatory 'hello' post.

I'm a type 1 male in their late 20s who's had diabetes for around 14 years now, no complications touch wood. I've also been posting on various diabetes-related forums for some time now (on one of them, I've been posting for nearly 10 years now!) but almost all are US based so this seemed a good opportunity to help and be helped by people closer to home.

My diabetes likes and dislikes are:

Likes:
  • Balancing a normal life with diabetes management
  • Not getting into A1C peeing contests
  • Treating D as just another thing to be dealt with
  • Everyone finding their own way to successfully manage their D -YMMV, or Your Mileage May Vary
  • Making non-Ds forget I have diabetes

Dislikes:
  • Those who are convinced that only one diet or treatment methods works
  • Making your entire life about your A1C and nothing else
  • Generalised complaints against the NHS for not offering pumps as standard
  • Nonsense naturopath 'cures'
  • Having to deal with non-Ds who think diabetes means you can never eat sugar or drink booze or do anything more dangerous than sit quietly on the sofa

Been around the block a few times with diabetes as well - I've tried pretty much every insulin available (was one for the first in the UK to try Levemir), been offered a pump but turned it down, and I've also a lot of experience of living with diabetes in countries with a)healthcare that's below Western standards and b)no state healthcare provision. I've also done a few supposedly no-no things with diabetes as well, like climbing mountains in Asia, diving the Barrier Reef, emigrating, week-long benders...basically, I try to pack quite a bit into my life where possible and there's genuinely nothing I love more than helping those worried about the supposed limitations of D get exactly what they want from the world. I also love hearing about new ideas and treatment methods and learning from others' experiences.

Anyway, that's me....I'll try to be helpful and not annoying 😱

OK I will own up, but shush don't tell everyone 😛

Hi DeusXM, welcome to the forum 🙂 Hope you enjoy using it and find it useful 🙂

Hi Deus. Welcome 🙂

I'd be interested to know why you were offered the pump and turned it down.🙂

Quite a full life packed in. You HAVE to be single to do that much ! 🙄:D

Hiya - don't think our paths have ever crossed in either of my online personae.

Rob - why do you say that? I never regard marriage as a reason to Not Do almost anything, exactly in the same way I regard diabetes.

Like I never wanted to climb a mountain in Asia or anywhere else and I've never dived the Barrier Reef, but I would quite like to do that very thing. I've been to the Maldives and seen the sort of underwater life on the shallow bits of the reef so I can only imagine what's on display further down. I have no desire whatsoever to go on black dives in freezing British quarry pools and no understanding of why anyone would - but wouldn't stop em if that's what floats their boat; we are all different !

I have 'issues' with the basals on offer. Levemir just doesn't seem to work in me, isophanes make me hypo out, while Lantus makes me sweat and has a negative impact on my mood. In the end I opted to stick with Lantus as I'm just not comfortable with the idea of being permanently attached to something. Also, I find pens more discreet.

You HAVE to be single to do that much !

Far from it, my girlfriend is largely responsible for organising most of the things I've done. I'm fine doing stuff, I'm just not very hot on the planning side of things.

I jest of course. But very often the rigours of family life can take up so much time that the plans don't always come to fruition. I've done stuff. I just had to wait a long time to do them.🙂

That's fair enough. I'm starting to become weary of injecting and would like to have a go at pumping. I've been on lantus for many years but don't have any issues with it. But I had to start splitting the dose last year.

I should have realised that it takes organising to do those things! :D

Another 'hello'

Good to have you around.

Interestingly I've just crossed the 'great divide' into Team Pump having been profoundly pump-averse for many years.

Only 6 months in and what has surprised me most are some of the positive benefits of being attached to something 24/7. It's not all marvellousness, but I'm pretty much converted I think - for the moment anyway! 🙄

I recognise you from other boards- good to see you here
I'm relieved to have my pump and would probably self fund if it was not provided but agree that some people think a pump is a care all when what they need is basic education and a bit of effort on MDI
