Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in March 2009, and started taking Metformin.
Was invited to Selly Oak Hospital for a trial with Victoza. Very happy with it although my previous GP seemed keen to put me on insulin - I think its due to costs really !(Have since moved house and enrolled with a new practise and they seem happy to prescribe Victoza)
It seems that its quite vital to maintain a healthy weight if you have Diabetes; this keeps your blood sugars low - but its quite a job to lose weight without feeling very hungry ! I`m not overweight (yet!) but have recently gained half a stone ! Could do with some tips please to lose this extra few pounds ! Always seem hungry though
love to hear from you all
regards, Judi

Hi Judi, welcome to the forum 🙂 Certainly, weight loss can help make you more sensitive to the insulin your body is producing, and along with the Victoza should help to keep your blood glucose levels under control. It's very difficult to lose weight when you only have a few to go, as I have found myself - I'm in the same boat as you, not overweight, but aware of the extra half-stone I'd like to shift.

The way I'm looking at it is that I'm not too concerned about the weight itself, what I am trying to do is to tone up and exercise frequently. Toned muscle is denser than body fat, so it can seem that despite your efforts nothing is happening. However, I'm aware that my appearance has improved and my trousers aren't quite so tight around the waist, so I'm seeing this as a 'non-scale victory' 🙂

Are you able to exercise regularly? You should also check out the Weight Loss section for lots of tips and support - hopefully you will pick up some ideas from there. Many people find that reducing carbs in their diet means they are less hungry, so eating protein snacks and bulking out meals with vegetables rather than potatoes, rice, pasta etc. can make you feel fll longer and have less impact on your levels.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, and we will try our best to help 🙂

Hi Judi, welcome from another T2. As Northey says, protein-based meals and snacks will keep away the hunger pangs for longer. There are some cracking ideas in the Food/Carbs threads, some of which I've tried and a few that I've posted.

As for weight loss, I'm deeply jealous of you for only having a few extra pounds to lose! I can vouch for weight loss improving insulin sensitivity, and I hope it works as well for you. Mind you, I had more of a mountain (now a hill) to shift!

thanks for getting back to me so quickly ! Yes, will try to "up" my walking and also can`t wait to get into my garden ! (we`ve moved house and I have lots to do there )
The only excuse I have at the moment is that we are of to Spain in the morning for a few days - will try to eat some healthy meals though ! We do laods of walking too - its just the booze that might be a problem !
speak to you soon !

Welcome to the forum Judi 🙂

Welcome to the forum. 🙂

I understand that soups can be quite good to help you feel fuller for longer too. I think it has something to do with all that extra liquid!

Also, they're really easy to make. Just throw a load of veg in a pan with some water, season how you like and when cooked just whizz it up, perhaps with a little milk!

My personal favourite is veg, lentil and smokey bacon.

You can also make a big batch of it and freeze in handy portion sizes.

Andy 🙂
