Hi there and welcome to the forum your in the right place for good advice and lost of helpful support, i cant answer all your questions as for medical alert i have one yes and so do many others, its always better to have one on your person then not, i think as long as you dont have hypos which is going low then you dont need to inform dvla, but someone will be along to confirm that for sure,i think people use diffirent sites for insurance some dont like to touch diabetics so its good to look around.
The metformin can cause tummy troubles it has for many of us give it 2-4 weeks and things should be fine if not see your GP..

Hi, and welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, on top of everything else you have had to cope with.

To answer your questions:

Metformin can cause tummy upsets initially, so you might be a bit 'windy'. These side effects should normally subside after a week or two, but if you find they are really bad and you can't put up with them there are alternative types that you can be prescribed by your doctor - they'll always start you off on the cheapest form though as most people can manage with it after a while.

You don't really need a medical alert as a Type 2 on metformin - these are usually for people on insulin when low blood sugars can lead to unconsciousness - that's highly unlikely to happen to you.

You don't need to inform the DVLA unless you are on medication that can cause low blood sugars (hypoglycaemia, or hypos for short) - metformin is not one of those medications.

You can cut out sugar completely if you want - it won't make you ill! Sugar is one form of carbohydrate, like potatoes, rice, pasta etc., it's just that it will convert to glucose more quickly and raise your blood sugars more quickly. What you need to do is make adjustments to your diet generally and reduce the portion sizes of carbohydrates - you don't need to cut them out completely!

Have a read of this post, under the Type 2 section for some useful links.

You're welcome 🙂 I know it can be a very worrying time when you are recently diagnosed as there seems to be so much to take in. Take it one step at a time and you will be fine, I'm sure 🙂

Welcome to the forum. When I went abroad and took out travel insurance I told them about my diabetes and was asked to ring another number where, after being asked a few questions about D type, meds and other illnesses, I was just asked to pay another ?6 for the 2 week holiday and everything was covered.

Welcome to the forum H 🙂

There's nothing else for me to add other than to give you a warm welcome to the forum and wish you a good nights sleep (if a bit late!).

Andy 🙂
