Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi i'm new to this type of forum, I've been diabetic for 22yrs and having lost a sibling to diabetes have tended to avoid other diabetics in past, now relise I may need a lot of support and and advice in the next couple of months.

I run a stable yard, compete my horses in British Eventing and have always been very proud of my fitness. This didn't stop me going of the rails big style in late teens, as a result I have had lots of lazer treatment and an eye operation. (and will be visiting the eye clinic every 3 months for life)

I am now 7 weeks pregnant and very scared that through my diabeties I will loose this baby. sugars all over even when one day is the same as the previous both in food and exercise any advice please, please??

Hi Nessy, welcome to the forum 🙂 Congratulations on your pregnancy! We've got lots of experienced mums and mums-to-be here who will hopefully be able to help by sharing their experiences with you. What is your healthcare team like?

What sort of insulin regime are you on? There can be so many factors involved in determining our blood sugar levels, as no doubt you are aware - hopefully by asking questions here you can learn something that will help you get better control - many people who have been diagnosed a long time are surprised at how much they haven't been told about because everyone assumes they must know everything. I'm not saying this is the case with you, but I think we are all learning from each other all the time.

Welcome to the forum Nessy & congratulations 🙂

Hi Nessy. Welcome to the foum. 🙂

Don't Panic!

If you have a good DSN, do what she tells you and make you and your baby the priority.

You may benefit from a pump if they can fast-track you (assuming you're not already on one). 🙂

Hi Nessy,
Congratulations to you.
I got gestational diabetes which is abit different but I got lots of help from my diabetic nurses.
I'm sure they will give you lots of support too.

Hi Nessy, big welcome to you both, and congratulations.

Its a big step coming on the forum I expect, but probably one of the best things you could do for yourself and little one. Even if you just read some of the posts, there maybe something that will help you, and in addition you will have all the support you want. Just ask away, there is always someone with similar experiences that can offer advice or empathy.

Nessy hi and welcome a big congrats on your pregnancy

Warm Welcom

Thank you so much for my warm welcomes. I had my first antenatal appointment today, and I'm back at the antenatal again ( a few worrying stabbing pains on my right side) tomorrow and at the diabetic clinic.

I phoned the diabetic clinic and asked them to start the process of getting me on a pump..... finger crossed they can get me on it before my competition on Friday as my sugars go into the mid 20's when I have an adrenaline rush cross country jumping.

You are right I'm shocked by how different they handle diabeties now compared to when I became diabetic at 15 yrs olds, and i injected twice a day and worked my food around thoses injections!!😱

Hi again Nessy.

I would imagine the BG in the 20s might present a problem to your ante natal clinic. Is there any way you can anticipate it and give a quick correction dose before (I mst admit I wouldn't like to do it but all's fair in love and pregnancy!).🙂

Hopefully you can get on a pump and it'll give you some flexibility. Is there any way you can stop the eventing for a while until you have a bit more stability?

Rob

...

I would very much doubt if you could be put on the pump so quickly - they are complicated things so require quite a lot of knowledge and experience before you gain the full benefits from them. Not suggesting it won't happen, but I wouldn't get your hopes up too much for such a short timescale.
