Type 2
H, I'm Paul.
I was diagnosed Type 2 many years ago and have been on metformin and Gliclazide a long time. Blood sugar levels have been pretty good but the last few days they have been rising (9.1 this morning). Yesterday, after a good walk, they topped at 12.3 which really concerned me. I have a real fear that I may be put on insulin. I hear that most people do after a long period. I have no symptoms apart from worry as I really suffer from health anxiety. I hope this doesn't sound too trivial.

It is easy to become complacent with your diet and maybe taking a look at the amount of carbohydrates you are actually having will reveal that you are having too much for your body to now cope with.
Clearly you have a blood glucose monitor so maybe you could do some targeted testing before and 2 hours after some of your meals as what you have assumed to be fine for you may not be so anymore. Look at this before assuming you will need to go on insulin if this is a big fear for you. I have no experience of it but some people will tell you that as long as the insulin regime is right for you it can help your well being.

Great advice, thanks. Talked to GP this morning who says insulin is not on the cards at the moment.

Hi @Sitosea, and welcome to the forum.

Like you I was diagnosed Type 2 many years ago and have been on metformin and Gliclazide a long time. (Yes, I have just copied and pasted your opening sentence 🙂). What I have found is that periodically my blood glucose levels generally go up for a short period and then come back down again after a day or two. I have no idea why it happens but it just does. Probably something to do with my pancreas beginning to show its age.

I'm expecting that one day they will go up and stay up and if that happens then so be it. I am relaxed about it because there are options for compensating for it and if further carb reduction and pill intake does not do it then there is the ultimate back up of insulin therapy which, even if it might be a bit of a fag, is virtually certain to put things right. Doubt if it will ever be needed, but it is nice to know it is there. Thats another way of looking at it.

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum. 🙂

It must be reassuring for you that your GP seems happy with your current treatment. That's good news!

If you are managing your diabetes well overall, I wouldn't worry too much about slightly high sugar levels for a few days. I can understand why you're worried, but even when you're doing everything right, sometimes these blips just happen. I hope your sugar levels come down soon and you are able to focus on other things. In the meantime, please feel free to ask questions on the forum if you need any other help.
