Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Although I have been observing for a couple of months and I have been diabetic for 20 years!

I am I type 1 or 2, was originally type 1 but this has always been and is still being debated! What do you think? I was first diagnosed at 31 it was the same week as I was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma (brain tumour) and so the idea was that the diabetes was caused by trauma (is that still a theory? Haven't heard it for a while). Anyway straight on to insulin so I could be stabilised, so they could operate. Did have two incidences of gestational diabetes in my twenties. Have always had Ok control, never brilliant, levels are very affected by illness. Had many problems with my eyesight lots of bleeds, laser, detached retina, cataracts (naturally following on from the detached retina) etc Now also on Metformin for insulin resistance, as well as five injections a day.

Anyway, enough about me for now look forward to chatting with youall, was going to come to the meet in Southampton but the dates don't work out, maybe next time.

PS My little Westie is also diabetic, 2 injections a day!
 
Welcome to the forum AJ 🙂. Can't comment on your diagnosis (I don't think "they" really know all the triggers for type 1 yet!), but as long as you're controlling it well I'd much prefer insulin to a cocktail of oral meds. There is so much more flexibility with being able to live your life and eat what you wish! My son is type 1 and on an insulin pump. The "trigger" in his case was his 2nd measles vaccination at the age of 4.

How does your little dog get on? Do you have to collect occasional urine samples or is testing only done at the vet?
 
Hello again AJ, many years ago I also had a dog with diabetes 🙂 He lived until he was 15 yrs old a very active collie. I used to use my own insulin for him as couldn't afford it from the vets 🙂 Can also remember carrying some milk and glucose with me when we were out for our walks just in case of a hypo.

I am controlling my levels better then ever at present, but it just gets a little irritating when people ask what type I am, if I say I'm unsure the usual response is I must know.

Joey, my westie has been diabetic since January, took a while to get it under control but he is fine now, quite young to have been diagnosed, he was only four. Biggest problem I have is find a sitter for the hols, we had got into a great routine with the MIL, but sadly she has recently died. Others would love to have him to stay but don't want to do the injections!
