Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello all,

I have been a diet-controlled (ie high carb) type 2 for about 5 years, but about 3 months ago was prescribed Metformin. I have discovered through reading online that a low carb diet could be good - I tried it for a few weeks, and did more exercise, with the result that my levels came down, my blood pressure came down, and I lost 4 kgs!

I had wondered why I was not losing weight while on high carbs, and why my levels were slowly going up - ! I am grateful to find this forum, and have found a lot of good advice here, as well as on another forum I post on. Thank goodness for sound sense. A pity the medical profession don't seem to have as much!

Hi Pine Marten, welcome to the forum 🙂 The idea that you should eat plenty of carbs with every meal is so outdated, it is almost criminal to be given such advice these days :( Diabetes (as you have now discovered) is all about carbs, since they are what will raise your blood glucose levels! Unfortunately, you are not alone. My Auntie who is in her late 70s was recently diagnosed and I was looking at the information leaflets she had been provided with - I was appalled 😱

Great to hear that things are now much improved 🙂 It may even be the case that, with a better understanding and control of your carb intake, you may not need the metformin in time.

If you have any questions, please ask away!

Many thanks for the welcome, Northerner, I may well ask questions... 🙂

I've got a DESMOND meeting in August, but from what I've read elsewhere they are generally not worth the aggro. I'd be interested in what people here say about them.

I've heard different assessments of DESMOND - a lot may depend on what you have already learned and the skills of those presenting the course. For me though, I think it is always worth attending these things as you will get to meet people in the same boat as you and that can be a real boost to your confidence whilst also helping to remove some of the isolation you may feel. There is a lot of negativity about diabetes in the media, but actually meeting people often shows you that we are all just people and not at all the terrible wastrels they often portray us to be! So, in my opinion you have nothing to lose but may gain a lot in ways you may not have expected 🙂

Welcome to the forum Pine Marten 🙂
