Type 2
Hello there,

I'm new here. Diagnosed Type 2 Sept 2011. Walking around with fasting BGs of 26 for a few years then managed to get them down to 15. Admitted to hospital a month ago DKA to be told I should have been on insulin all along. 1st consultant appointment 5th May so will hopefully find out what type of D I have. Waiting for carb counting appointment too. Fluctuating between joy and relief that I will finally get the right treatment after struggling for years and being completely fed up as I don't know what I'm doing, it's difficult to get a call back from a DSN for advice and I'm still weak as a kitten 3 and a half weeks after discharge.
Returning to work 5th April (found out today I won't be getting the sack for being off sick yay) and I'm worried about that.
I've given up crisps and sugar free jelly is saving my life.

Cheers.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I am newly diagnosed in December 2015.

Hi I'm new to the forum and to insulin too, not to Diabetes though. Best move I ever made was going onto insulin.
My BG levels are much much better than when I was just on Gliclazide, previously on metformin for many years. on a bad day they'd be up in the 20s 😡 .
In January I was hospitalised for a complication of diabetes and was put on insulin.
I must say I received good care whilst in hospital.

Sugarthat. It's awful that you were not properly looked after right from the start.

Hi sugarthat, welcome to the forum 🙂 It's pretty terrible that you had such high levels for so long without it being properly investigated :( What insulin have they put you on, and how are you finding things now? Your body will have taken quite a knocking over the years, so it may take a while before you get your strength back and start to feel better, but hopefully it won't be long now 🙂 Please let us know if there is anything we can help with 🙂

Hi,
Thanks for your replies. Northerner, I'm on NovoRapid 8u before meals and I take 20u of Lantus before bed. My fasting BG has more or less halved and I do feel better than I did before insulin . I'm waiting for a carb counting appointment and I'm quite looking forward to that. What's frustrating is knowing where to look for information. I'm a Type 2 but the advice for Type 2s doesn't necessarily help me now I'm using insulin. My DSN says she's treating me as a Type 1 but I can't get that straight in my head as my shrivelled up pancreas still produces a little bit of insulin. I'll know more once I've seen the consultant I suppose.

You've found the best place for information and getting your questions answered!🙂

Reducing your carbohydrate intake will help you a lot, whatever sort of diabetic you are.
Good luck

Hey @sugarthat , welcome to my world! 🙂 I was diagnosed 8 years ago and put on similar amounts of insulin to what you are currently on. After 4 years I had had to reduce the lantus so much that I had to stop it - still don't need it 4 years later! I do still need the novorapid though, so obviously, even after 8 years, I'm still producing some insulin of my own, just not enough to cope with any carbs in food. We really do cover a very broad spectrum in our needs! I think it's probably not true that you are a Type 2, but a 'Type Weird' like me, and should perhaps regard yourself as a cousin of Type1 😉 Type 2s are usually characterised by insulin resistance, and would normally need much higher doses of insulin than you are using currently. Hopefully, the carb counting will help you to learn how to tailor your doses so you can improve your control further and give you a lot more flexibility 🙂

Please let us know how you get on with the consultant, and/or if you have any more questions 🙂

Hiya! Type of diabetes? - my money is on LADA, frankly!
