Hello new friends,

I was diagnosed with Type 2 about 8 years ago but have spent much of that time with my ostrich head buried in the sand. I'm now waking up, pulling my head out of the sand and trying to take control. Anyway, I'm looking for lots of tips and ideally some pointers on the best low carb cook books around as I'm also starting on my journey to lose 50lbs. I'm hoping that lots of you have been where I am right now and so might have some good ideas to help get me on the right track.

thank you for any advice or responses you feel like sharing with me.
LP 🙂

Hello and welcome lilypad. Well done for coming up for air and to this weird world of diabetes. I don’t believe there are any actual diabetic cook books but I did find a low carb one at Sainsbury’s. I also saw that The Mail is starting a new series within the paper about diabetes and low carb starting tomorrow, might be worth a look. Basically you need to try to avoid as many carbs as you can, so potatoes, rice, pasta, bread etc as well as the obvious sugary things including lots of fruits. It’s amazing how quickly you can adapt and I can honestly say the only thing I really miss is my bread though I do occasionally ‘go mad’ and have a sandwich. You will find that quite quickly you will start losing weight and blood sugars will come down. There is section on the forum with recipes on so have a look at that. Any questions you have just ask as there are loads of people willing and happy to help. Good luck

Hi Lilypad, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'd recommend starting by reading Maggie Davey's letter which should help to give you some ideas and some focus on how to set about achieving good control of your blood sugar levels 🙂 Are you on any medication for your diabetes? If you are, you may need to speak to your doctor or nurse about your plans as you may need to adjust your medications if you decide to significantly reduce your carbs.

Do you know what sort of levels you are currently getting i.e. do you test with a home blood glucose meter?

A good attitude ! Well done 😎 Good luck & welcome.😉

Hi @Lilypad, and welcome. For quite a while I used recipes from Robin Ellis's cookery books (the actor - himself type 2), which are available from Amazon, 'Delicious Dishes for Diabetics', and 'Healthy Eating for Life'. I see there is another too, 'Mediterranean Cooking for Diabetics'. He uses a lot of herbs, spices and wine instead of heavy sauces.

You might be able to find a 2003 edition of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution, which is not only about weightloss but contains quite a lot of good advice about type two diabetes, and has lists of foods, menus and recipes.

Hi @Lilypad & welcome to the forum. As everyone has said above carb control is key. We are all here to support you in any way we can 🙂.

Thank you everyone for your very kind and very helpful replies. I can't wait to get started on all these new recipes! thank you very very much.
I feel the support springing out from the screen and it's gratefully received. 🙂

Hi there Northerner - I"m not doing so well with my blood control right now and yes I'm on some medication. My GP spoke to me about diet and getting on a low carb path but it's a mine field at first isn't it? I think anything at this point to lower my levels through carb control will be a positive step. Thanks for your encouragement. 🙂
