Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone i'm new to the site and wondered if any body could help me please. I have been told recently that i am a type 2 diabetic and i'm on metaformin. my nurse told me that the reason i was type 2 has a lot to do with my weight lets just say i am a "big girl" but ive joined slimming world and have lost nearly 33 pounds, she also said that if i keep going with my weight loss my Diabetes may just go away 😱 is this true? i have read a lot of things on the interent but everything says different things? also i thought all diabetics could get a bloodsugar monitor from the NHS but she said i can't have one free of charge (has anyone else come across this) she did give me the number of where to get the ones that they use which is the microdot blood sugar monitor so i rang them for some information, i had to buy mine (because i dont use insulin) it was 19.99 and it came with some strips, but i ordered some more as well for an extra ?13, i'm really just curious to see if my weight loss affects my bloodsugar readings, looking at other posts on here i think i've got a bargin and the lady on the phone talked me through how to use it. i've not had it long enough to notice a difference with my weight loss but i'm going to keep checking

Well done with weight loss! That will make a difference if you can keep it up, says she who has only lost half a stone in the last year.🙄 As you say, meters are only given to those on insulin and I had to buy mine, but your test strips may be given to you on prescription. It seems to depend on the surgery. I'm lucky with mine. Keep up the good work.:D

Welcome to the forum Holly 🙂

I think meters depends on where you are. I was given one by my GP Nurse, but based on the comments here - I probably would of brought one if that hadn't of been the case.

Good on that weight loss too - that's a similar amount to what I lost in total and I definitely saw a difference in my blood sugar readings.

For the original question; I get the feeling it depends on what is in the supply cupboard. I was given a FreeStyle Lite but I believe that my PCT specifies a different make of meter as the standard.

Hi Holly. Congratulations on the weight loss, it does make a difference.

I was given a meter, and I can get some strips to test twice a week, which is not enough in the beginning stages, so I buy extra strips to test my food and what effect it has on my BG levels. Woirth asking your GP for some strips though.🙂

Hi Holly

Welcome to the forums 🙂

We decided that you should have your own thread so that you could get a proper welcome from all the fine folks here.

Please don't take this the wrong way... You didn't do anything 'wrong' or 'in the wrong place' but we didn't want your message to be missed at the bottom of another thread about BG meters.

Hope I didn't confuse you when your posts disappeared from where you'd left them!

If you haven't already you might want to take a peek at some of the links on the 'Useful info' thread. http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=10406 All sorts of goodies and great sources of information for diabetics new and old alike.

Congratulations on your weight loss and welcome again

Welcome Holly.Brown - to the boards and your own thread - we didn't want you to be ignored in someone else's, not that you did anything wrong.

Hope you enjoy having your own thread, plus many others in your time here! 🙂

hi Holly...... welcome to the forum.

being newly diagnosed can be fairly scarey..... but you are in the right place... HERE.... lol. there is always someone who can answer your questions.... just ask. no question is silly and no one will laugh.... honest.

well done for losing so much weight.... in time it will make a difference to your BG levels.

I'm no expert (just a year since my diagnosis) but if I can answer questions or help in any other way... just ask 🙂

in the meantime have a look around the forum and join in where you feel you can 🙂

xXx

Hi Holly and a warm welcome to the forum,

Many congratulations on your weight loss hun thats great news x

Welcome to the forum Holly.

Put it this way, I was diagnosed in October 2009 weighing nearly 18st. My HbA1c was 13.3% (in old money) and my spot BG readings were well into the 20's.

I was initially put on to Gliclazide and then Metformin once my levels had stabilised.

After just three months of weight loss I was able to stop the metformin too. Since then I have got myself down to 14st and am still off all medication. My last HbA1c was 6.0% (a bit up on my best of 5.7%, but I'd been a little off colour prior to the last one).

I've been lucky in some ways because my pancreas still produces a reasonable amount of insulin. This may not always be the case for others and the result of weight loss may vary.

Anyhow, good luck with your journey.

Andy 🙂

p.s. I think regular exercise is just as important as the weight loss, if not more so. I basically walked (briskly) for an hour each day and have generally kept that up.

Hi Holly and welcome.

Diabetes doesn't go away as such. I have a relative who is now off all medication following a very large weight loss, but it does not happen with everyone, and if you were to gain the weight again the symptoms would come back.

Hello Holly and welcome to the forum. Well done on your brilliant weight loss.

Welcome Holly. You've come to the best place for support from the great people on this forum! Congrats on the weight loss, you've done brilliantly well! Katie

Hi I am close to colchester and my doctors surgery has loads to give away wether its type one or two.

Hi Holly & Hi Picklejan. Welcome both 🙂

Hi

Well done for the weight loss it will make quite a difference. A freind joined slimming world & is looking fantastic; by losing weight gradually less likely it will go back on (she hopes).

When diagnosed I was slightly overweight. BMI was 26. Since then lost half a stone to come down to 24.5 BMI.

My suger level was 12.5 when picked up & by cutting out the junk I went to 7.2 in 3 months. (On Metformin)

I couldn't do a lot of exercise to start as I was having some cancer treatment (all over). I upped the exercise and in November my HBA1c level had come down to 5.8%; so anything on the diet/exercise front will help your levels.

My Metformin dose has been cut by half.

Keep up the good work

Hi Holly! Yes, a lot of us use the software - as you say, it's good for spotting patterns and identifying those 'slip-ups' with the chocolate! 🙂

Good to see you again Holly 🙂

Glad you are enjoying playing with you fancy graphs!

Keeping good records is a great help when trying to crack D-challenges

Welcome to the forum Holly and brilliant news about the weight loss! 🙂

Hello Holly, welcome, I do the software thing for blood pressure too, stopped me having a bad episode or two as my weight dropped, so did my BP, so all very useful.
