Hi, i’ve just been diagnosed type 2 and started taking Metformin.
Has anyone suffered side effects? I’ve had a very upset tummy since starting them a week ago and i’m hoping someone can tell me how long this will last! Please help!?

Hi and welcome.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but you have found the right place for help and support.
I think most people suffer at least some tummy upset with Metfartin (as it is unaffectionately known) so you are not alone in that. It was intermittent with me for several weeks and then even then after that I would get odd bouts of colic pain and wind or diarrhoea occasionally but nothing too debilitating.
It helps to take them mid meal or just after eating, but if the symptoms persist or are making life difficult, there is a slow release version available which is kinder on the digestive tract.

Hi and welcome, one big tip is to have your Metformin after your biggest meal of the day as it really does help to keep the side effects as low as they can be. I can’t remember how long I had an upset tum for but it did settle and I didn’t need to go to the slow release. See how you get on.

Welcome to the forum @Tr242

Sorry to hear you are experiencing some of Metformin’s fairly common side effects. :(

Hopefully the gastric upheaval will settle down fairly quickly for you as it does for many people.

Or i hope that one of the suggestions from members above helps you.

Hi, Like many others I also had upset stomach when I first started SR Metformin, looking back it last 3-4 weeks and since then no problem.

Hi i took Metformin for 6 weeks with terrible diarrhoea at times so was put on the Slow release version which i have been taking about 6 weeks. Still not normal but slowly getting there. I have def noticed a difference if i take during my evening meal. On occasions i have been late taking i notice the bad side affects the next day. Seems much better on a full stomach.

Hi, For what its worth, I take my metformin halfway through my meal, no real reason , it just seemed the easiest way to do it and not to forget!

Me too, just to be on the safe side! I had the trots for a couple of weeks but I've had no trouble since.

Gives me excessive wind.

Metformin seemed determined to turn me inside out, and I only lasted a round 5 weeks. It was horrible.
The most galling thing was realising that it was totally unnecessary.
I did get a professional standard carpet cleaner out of the experience, so I suppose it was not time entirely wasted.
