Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,

I was diagnosed as a type 2 two weeks ago and since then have been busy trying to learn all I can and change my life around. I've joined a gym, got myself a testing kit (I test 3 x a day at present to check what foods spike my BG) and am in the process of changing my previously bad diet too (the hardest part!).

As yet I haven't seen any diabetes nurses or had any support from the NHS - not sure whether this is a good or bad thing! Anyway, just wanted to say hello and see if there are any other people close to me in Gloucester. 🙂

Hi Jules and welcome to the forum.

Have you been put on any meds? and has you Dr given you any information at all. It can be quite scary when you are first diagnosed as you seem to fall over horror stories in the press. Don't worry though there are lots of people who have been where you are.

If you haven't already read it - here is a link that you may find helpful.

you seem a positive person & on the right track. Good luck 😉 See diabetes uk site for groups in area.

Thankyou, both of you 🙂
Margie - No, I'm being 3 months on diet and exercise to see if I improve, so no meds yet. Also no, I've had no info of any kind - found everything out for myself as I wasn't prepared to wait for the Drs' surgery to hire a new diabetes nurse (it's been promised she's on the way but no date given). I'm also supposed to be going on an education course but haven't heard anything yet! Probably, by the time it all happens, I'll know alot of what I'm meant to anyway!!!

Luckily I wasn't scared when I was diagnosed as I have other things I have to deal with (bipolar type 2 and asthma) so it was just one more thing. If anything I saw it as a challenge, but that's just the way I am lol!

Hi Jules, welcome to the forum 🙂 It sounds, like a lot of people, you have been diagnosed and then pretty much left to get on with things (which is so wrong in my opinion), but fortunately you are savvy enough to know where to look and find out the things you need to know to start managing your diabetes well. Glad you joined us - there are loads of really friendly, helpful people here with a wealth of experience, so if you are ever stuck on anything, please just let us know 🙂

Hope fully, you can get on your education course before too long. You may, as you say, be already clued up on most things by then, but it can be very helpful meeting and talking with others in a similar situation, so it's worth going along just for that!

I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi Jules. Welcome 🙂

Rob

Hi Jules, it is a problem just being left to get on with it. Just make sure your GP monitors you and then learn as much as you can bit by bit.

The best thing I did was get a test meter and tested what foods I could get on with and those to avoid. Had to buy most of my own test strips though, but just visit a well known auction site.

Oh, and found the guys on here!

Welcome to the forums Jules 🙂

Hi Jules, welcome to the forum - really like you're postive attitude. As I'm sure you've been told ask as many questions as you need to... Amanda x 🙂
