Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hey Guys
I've been T2 for about 4 years now, at first I controlled it with diet but found it hard to control after a year or so, I've tried all sorts of tablets but none have ever agreed with me, now my sugars sit between 16 and 22 so obviously to high that my biabetic nurse has put me on 16 units of Semglee that I take each day at the same time, thing is I've seen no shift in my sugar levels, my question is howong does it take to see any results.
Thank you for reading.

I know nothing about insulin so will leave it to more knowledgeable members to comment. But just wanted to say welcome!

Welcome to the forum.
How long have you been injecting Semglee.

They usually start us off conservatively for a couple of reasons,
1) They don’t want to bring our levels down too quickly as that can cause some unpleasant symptoms

2) We are all different in the amount of insulin we need, they do have a formula to go by, but they really don’t know how insulin resistant we are

You need to keep in close communication with your diabetes nurse as much tweaking will be needed initially, you may also need a a rapid insulin for mealtimes, the Semglee you are on is a Basal (background insulin) which is designed to cope with the glucose your liver produces between meals to keep your organs including your brain fuelled .

I hope this helps

Thanks Ljc for your response, this is the 3rd day of taking insulin. And to be honest I feel lousy lol

What symptoms are you having .

Because of the type of insulin Semglee is (insulin glargine) it does actually take about 3 days to get going and similar when you come off it, it continues to have any effect for up to 3 days. Same when you adjust the dose of it up or down.

Hence although you are feeling lousy with BGs that high - I can only suggest you hang on a bit longer. As well as only eating non- or very low carbohydrate food at the moment, also make sure you drink plenty of plain water which encourages the body to pee out excess glucose.

BUT!! - can I ask you, before slapping you on it, did they do any more blood tests to establish very firmly that you are definitely Type 2? (There's a test called C-peptide which should establish that.)

Hi. This is a Basal insulin and will help reduce the background glucose produced by the liver. If you are eating a lot of carbs it won't help. Can you let us know what your BMI is. The advice to have a C-peptide test can help confirm a T1 or T2 diagnosis. If you are over weight then you will almost certainly be T2 and need to keep your carb intake down. If you are slim then T1 becomes possible. A low carb diet also helps but then if your blood sugar remains high a mealtime insulin would need to be added
