Hi there. my name is Lisa, I am 48yr old from North Yorkshire.

I was diagnosed about 2 yr ago.. with type 2 diabetes.. I am very overweight so will be looking for help with that on the relevant forum spot 🙂

I guess I have lived in a bit of denial over the past two years.. my diabetes is managed with tablets and supposedly diet but I hate to admit I have been terrible with it. I am now at the stage of needing more help, advice and support from people who have been there, done that.. and come out the other side (or are still trying to). I now also have Psoriatic Arthritis (not to mention high blood pressure) so losing weight is my main priority.

Thanks for having me here.. I look forward to reading the forums and trying to gain a bit of insight.
 
Morning @mrswoman1972 and welcome to the forum.

Well, you have passed stage 1 and recognise where your problem lies. The next stage is to work out a plan to deal with it.

If you read around the forum you will find a lot of comments about cutting the carbohydrate content of what we eat. This is not just sugars but all carbohydrates. The reason is simple. Carbohydrates are converted to glucose in the gut, the glucose finishes up in the blood and if your body for some reason cannot process it, your blood glucose levels go high and you get a diabetes diagnosis. Reducing carbohydrate in your diet reduces the amount of glucose generated and brings your blood glucose down.

There are various ways of going about carb reduction and your reading around should give you some ideas. You will also find that many have achieved their second goal of losing weight with a reduced carb diet without really trying and so getting a double benefit.

Finally, ask questions about things that are important to you. No question is considered silly on here - we have all been there!

Hi @mrswoman1972 and welcome from a fellow Yorkshire T2, though I now live in South Yorks rather than North or West where my heart lies!

I think @Docb has nailed it really, it's mostly about the carbs. The thought of going low-carb is horribly scary, but once you start it's not so bad after all. I hope others will be along with their success stories and suggestions soon, but in the meantime I'll let you know that until April of this year I had a bagel or bacon sandwich for breks, baguette or fish and chips for lunch, then dinner with potatoes, pasta or rice. And I was always hungry! Fast forward to August and I've lost over 2 stone and I'm rarely hungry. Seems carbs feed off carbs, you just want more. Still got over 1.5 stone to get to my target though, so I'm not feeling complacent 😉

Does your Psoriatic Arthritis mean you can't exercise much? My best ever chum has this and she is pretty much in constant pain and unable to exercise apart from her exercise bike. If you can manage to exercise, burning off those extra calories obviously helps as well, but it's no good if you are in too much pain, or your high BP is suffering.

Thanks all. Sadly the Psoriatic Arthritis means I am pain a lot.. it is in all joints too. I was put on medication that lowers my immune system (as it's caused by the immue system attacking itself ) Obviously that has been fun especially in todays climate!... It worked well and I was able to manage stairs etc without looking like a 90yr old.. but sadly it has caused elevated liver enzymes so they have taken me off them 2 weeks ago .. waiting to find out what blood results are next week and where to go from here. My knees are worst affected with one unable to bend hardly at all... I used to have an exercise bike but the GP said it was doing more harm than good so I am stuck to walking for now.. obviously lockdown was tough since I was shielding for months not even able to walk. I am back at work now (in a busy cafe) I stand for 6-7 hours a day 3 days a week and get in plenty of steps on those days.. so least I am active.. (all be it sometimes slowly lol)
 
Hello @mrswoman1972 and welcome to our forum.
Living with the pain of Arthritis, must be very difficult, but hopefully your plan to loose some weight may help with this as well as helping your Diabetes.
Many of us find that following a low carb diet is the answer to both lowering blood glucose levels, and loosing weight.
Maggie Davey's letter, shows how this lady approached the problem.
