Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All, I’m new to the group, I have had type 2 for around 5 years, recently had bad Covid and it attacked my Diabetes, my Keytones were 9.6, as a result I came out on insulin and am really struggling, they have stopped 2 x diabetes medication and my sugars are spiralling out of control, I am massively upping my insulin to combat, but don’t want to be on insjlin for long. Martin

Welcome @Hunty1970 🙂 I hope you’re recovering ok from the Covid. What insulin(s) are you on? How high is your blood sugar? Is your team upping your insulin to deal with the high sugars?

That sounds sensible. If your sugars have been high then it’s best to bring them down gradually. It’s very usual to be started on a lower dose of insulin than you probably need for safety’s sake too.

M3 is a mixed insulin - a mix of background slow insulin and a fast insulin to deal with your meals. If you can stick to roughly the same amount of carbs for your meals each day you’ll get more steady blood sugar results and your team will be able to judge your needs more easily.

It might well be that you can come off the insulin in the future, but at the moment it sounds like it’s what you need. I know it’s stressful and can be worrying, but the insulin should control your blood sugar and help you while you need this extra support.

Sorry to hear you’ve been having such a tough time @Hunty1970

Were you put on steroids as part of your Covid treatment? And are you still taking them? Those can push your BGs up.

What have they suggested you do about food? Have they recommended rough carbohydrate counts for your different meals?

Hopefully when the doses are adjusted a little better for you, you’ll gradually see a reduction in BG levels.

Hi there Hunty

You must be feeling pretty rough with BGs in the 20s all the time.

You mention having had 9.6 ketones (Did you have Diabetic ketoacidosis?) I am wondering because I have read elsewhere that Covid can actually cause T1. Plus it’s unusual for T2s to have ketones that high. It may be worth asking if you could have a CPeptide test to ascertain whether in fact you are still producing any insulin of your own.
